-- What…and where is good line of dogs? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928540548)
What…and where is a good line of dogs?
I copied the “Tell the truth thread’s” first post…
The responses seem to say it is near impossible to do so…it makes me think the folks who do have a good consistent line of dogs should keep their mouths shut for two reasons…
1.they will be thought of as liars…
2. By many, it seems impossible to breed a good line of dogs….so those that can and do…will keep their mouths shut because if not…they are bragging…
So…go with the flow…it is much easier that way…😳
Tell the truth
Who has a line of dogs they feel are consistent in treeing and having the meat in thin game/ dry tracking conditions?
Not everyone lives in an area like that or wants that type of dog, but some of us do.
What are you hunting?

We need answers to the right questions
What is a good hunting coon dog? Many will say many different ways to hunt so how can you answer that…well…if that’s what you think maybe you shouldn’t attempt to breed a line of dogs…
A dog should hunt at a decent speed…not to fast but not slow…too fast and will miss tracks…start fairly close but hunt out if no evidence of decent tracks…keep ranging out but checks in…honors other dogs and packs up as needed…these are hunting dogs not competition dogs…but these dogs will put on a clinic when having a competitive nature…
These dogs can find the hot end of the track pretty quick because they are smart…they hunt with their nose extended horizontally to their body and don’t need to straddle a track…they are excellent at drifting a track and can wind a layup or hot track…
They can hunt anywhere any other dog can hunt…and they don’t hunt in straight lines…and they aren’t hot nosed dogs…
When we know this type of dog then we have the first step of breeding a better line of dogs…

The next thing is selecting the line of dogs that have what you think is the best hunting type dogs…
Look for the pups that have the sire and dam that have the right traits…as well as a grandparents and others in the pedigree…don’t just buy one pup…buy several to improve your chances of picking the right pup or pups…test pups to see what natural abilities are in each pup… this is important in breeding for natural abilities…
Remember…a pup is a small version of the bigger package it will become…look for the clues…but set your expectations to age of pup…just plain ole common sense comes in handy…
If you want consistency stick with the bloodline and don’t be chasing the latest and greatest no matter how tempting…
Just keep enough pups to select the right one to breed back into the bloodline…
Every now and then breed to a dog from a separate line that has 33 or 50 percent of your line mixed in…and of the same style of hunt…
Once you have the line where you want it just breed the same dogs to sell a few pups once in a while without going to the next generation…only progress when needed…
When selecting pups to keep and breed…it can make you or break you…select accordingly…

I like a loud bawl mouth locate and rolling over to a loud chop…
at the tree…I’d rather someone else fill in the blanks…

Specialty dog…hot nosed dog…
Specialty dog…cold nosed dog…
Balanced dog…takes tracks as they come…
Prefers hot tracks and medium tracks and will take colder tracks and warm them up quickly…this is a well balanced dog…in my opinion the best dog…
It makes sense that most hunters will like this dog the best…it’s not like game is scarce…
The market isn’t there for cold nosed dogs…but they fall in the specialty category…

My dad has a female off of big money and I can’t remember what the mom is off of, but my dads female is probably one of the most consistent dogs I have ever hunted with and doesn’t matter the terrain or conditions.
Last year from March to November right before she came into heat she made 38 trees and 36 of them the coon was seen.
She’s a very fast strike dog in the hunts 9 out of 10 drops you will get first strike with her and most of the time she will get first tree and 9 times out of 10 you will see the coon very seldom does she miss the coon.
So just in my opinion Big Money dogs are the way to go

Sounds like she has got what we all want…first strike and tree means she has what it takes…a well balanced dog…if she were hot nosed she wouldn’t be able to do what she is doing…treeing in front of many coon dogs…
When I had my line of dogs and someone’s dogs could hunt as well as my dogs I would have to shake their hand…a good dog is a good dog anywhere…

Now don’t get me wrong there’s gonna be nights she messes up but she’s a dog and all dogs will mess up at sometime while hunting.
Your absolutely right Reuben when training a dog you gotta learn more than just it’s brain and nose. Because there’s more to it than just those two things.
