Highlight of the night

I stopped by the gas station for some gas last night before heading to the woods. As I pulled in a noticed a young boy pumping gas in a new Ford ranger, not a big deal around my parts. I came out, put the ice in my cooler, and proceed to back out. As I’m backing up, I see this youngster leaning his head out of the passenger window with wide eyes and curiosity at my truck.
So I pull right up alongside him and ask if he’s ever been coon hunting before?
He replies no.
Have you ever seen a coon dog before?
He says no.
I ask him, do you want to?
He got the biggest grin on his face and excitedly replied, yes!
So I take this young man to the back of my truck and get my young Plott male out to show him.
He asked what kind of dog he was, what I do with him, how old he is, and if he likes riding in that box, haha.
I answer all of his questions and load my dog back up.
I turned to him and asked him his name. He tells me it’s Lucas. I extend my hand, and tell him I’m James and shake his little hand.
That little man got back in his truck and his grandmother leans over and thanked me for being so kind to him. I told her it was my pleasure and invited him to go hunting with me any time he got ready for it.
I drove off and thought about that look on little Lucas’ face the rest of the night.
Sorry for the long winded story, but I thought you all would enjoy it. Here’s to you, Lucas. Hopefully he dreamt of his first meeting with a coon dog last night.

That’s a great story and a great deed you did….but they is some sadness to this story….
The young boy Lucas still hasn’t seen a COONDOG!! But he has seen a Plott!! 😂😂
Happy hunting

Great Story!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story as at one point and time I was that little boy... Also Jason's comment wins the forum today, that was good enough for a Mic Drop...

Thanks for all the encouraging words, guys and gals.

Ole Hoss, it’s kind of funny you’re the one to finally come out and say it, because that young Plott male is named Hoss.

I’m used to the ribbing by now, Hoss. If you’re gonna have any breed, there’s always gonna be someone giving you a hard time. I’m just surprised it took someone this long to say something.

Lol. We may kid each other, but we ALL are part of the brotherhood and coon hunting community. Happy hunting. Dave

Amen to that, Dave. You give me the choice between listening to a Liberal talk to me about politics or a Walker man telling me about how his breed is superior, and I’ll take that Walker man’s sermon every single time.
We all view this little world we live in vastly different depending on our chosen breeds, even the lines we choose within those breeds, but at our core we’re all the same. Each one of us gets our kicks following a dog through the woods at night in search of a critter. It just so happens that some of us choose to follow a smarter, nicer colored dog than others! Haha.
Thanks again to everyone for reading and commenting. Maybe next time one of you notices a curious kid looking your way, you’ll take a little time and educate them on this lifestyle we choose to live. My exchange with Lucas didn’t take 5 minutes out of my day, but his reaction left a lasting impression on me.

This just took me back 50 years, (minus the new Ford Ranger truck) lol. I remember how excited I would get when I saw a coonhound of any kind. That young man needs to go hunting, I'd say he'd be hooked. Thanks for shearing, great read.

This is what will keep coonhunting alive. Thank you for making that little fella’s day and for sharing it with us.
