Vaccination question

Is there a vaccine and is it affective for Ehrlichia in dogs.

Mr. Miller. Here is something I think might help and I keep throwing this out to help people. But to also see if anyone has negative thoughts on it.

Sawyer has products that work in keeping the ticks off the dogs. It has permethrin in it and you can spray your hunting clothes also your dogs. I keep the back of my vest sprayed. It last 6 weeks or 6 washing on hunting clothes. On the dog you can spray it on them while kind of ruffing up the hair coat. We have ticks bad and it works well on my hunting clothes.

(Sorry JMiller for the HiJack!) Was wondering if Sawyer will take care of flea and fly problems also. Do you have any first hand knowledge? Also how often do you use on hounds? Every hunt or as labeled for clothing?

I give mine the flea and tick pill monthly. that usually keeps them off but ever now and then I will find a little one on them but it is dead or dying, but has probably bit them. Yes, I am trying to spray and rub it in on my hound before hunting him and hope that will help also. I just had one with Ehrlicia , had to treat him and trying to do all I can to prevent it in other ones.

Ehrlicia is hard on a dog and I am not sure they ever fully recover. Maybe get back 90% but I have my doubts about 100% There are some other tick issues out there also. Had one with a rare tick problem. Very good dog early. Just lost half a step late.

The latest protocol for ehrlichia at least as I understand is a much more aggressive treatment. I am almost finished with a 45 day treatment of 600 mg per day of Doxycycline. It is supposed to get it completely out of their system. I will know in a short while. Developed by the University of Missouri.

Around here the vets are giving 300 twice a day for 30-45 days for tick illnesses. I know some guys are even using fishdox at that level. Best to give some probiotics with it also , the doxy kills the good bacteria also .

I would think that every hunting dog is bit by a tick with this at some point in their life. Some dogs must just get over it on their own. Always breed for health in your dogs.

I think the topicals are the best protection because they don't have to bite the dog for these to kill the ticks.

I have a dog with it, according to the University of Ill. vet school there is no getting over it. When it is cold ( below 40 ) he is real good. But when it gets warm, he will over heat and do things that is not normal. I have had him treated twice. That is my experience with it

Not so sure about Ehrlicia in dogs, but I have been treated with Doxycycline ( 30 day treatments) for both Lymes and Rocky Mtn Spotted fever. Doctor told me that I would never be "cleared" of it and would have lingering effects from now own.

Travis, I'm not a fan of the topicals at all. My inlaws use them religiously and they're dogs have lyme issues every year, but retrievers like that are more prone to showing lyme effects. It is strange how some dogs it almost kills, some dogs it does nothing to, and lots of in between.

I think much of the thyroid issues people are dealing with are spawned from tick disease.

I'm currently using Seresto collars with Simparica Trio. Hoping this combo works to keep ticks from attaching in the 1st place but if they do, it'll kill them quickly before they can transmit bacteria.

I had Lyme, Anaplasmosis and Erlichia all last summer, I can assure you it's no fun. My worst symptoms were extreme fatigue and sweating like a pregnant nun at confession. I'd be sitting in the AC and just drenched in sweat.

Have you guys had good luck with Lyme vaccine? I never got it for dog until this year. Even vets have mixed feelings on it. And it doesn't protect from the other tick diseases so not sure I see the point.
