Thermal Poll

Should UKC allow hunters to use thermals on hunts. (not to score a tree. You still have to show the cast the coon)

Posted by shadinc on 05-12-2021 04:12 PM:

My first question is, would it be fair to those who don't have a thermal for whatever reason.

Is it fair for those who don’t have a bright enough light?
Is it fair for those who don’t have a gps type of tracking system?

With all due respect buddy, and i mean no disrespect at all, there are alot of things not fair in this game. I worked overtime at work to pay for my thermal unit. There are alot of men in this game with way more purchasing power than I have.

Posted by Richard Lambert on 05-12-2021 04:58 PM:

Your poll should say:
A. I don't have a thermal so I don't think that anyone should be able to use them.
B. I have a thermal so I think everyone should be able to use one.
C. I don't have a thermal but I don't care if everyone can use one.
D. I have a thermal but I still don't think that anyone should be able to use one.

Posted by shadinc on 05-12-2021 05:41 PM:

I only asked because that was UKC's original reason for not allowing the use of tracking devices.

I'd let the cast use my thermal, why not help the best dog win. That's what it should be about. Your looking for the coon not scoring with the thermal.

If you can buy one I suppose everybody can buy one. Why didn't I think of that?

Dont buy one if you dont want to, but dont make it about "not being fair." There is alot money spent in this sport.

Silly not to use technology to get the best, most accurate information to use in judgments. I was surprised when they took such a strong stand against GPS.... I thought they should be mandated to wear as GPS collar and the judge holds the hand held.... Why not eliminate any questions about which dog is what direction?

Maybe every non hunting judge at major hunts should have one.

Circle

How many circle trees would become minus points instead of circle points when the thermals show no heat in the tree?

Posted by OLD TIMER on 05-12-2021 08:44 PM:

If ???

one out of the 4 cast members have one can he only use it to find "his/her" coon? I have seen so many that won't help look for a coon now I can only guess how great this would turn out--But as the Old Bluetick writer would say, Fun was had by all!!

Now I can see an easy fix to this---THERMAL CAN ONLY BE USED WHEN "ALL" DOGS ARE TREED ON THE SAME TREE WHEN CAST ARIVES AT TREE.

None. In the summer half the tree may show heat where the tree is holding heat. These things are not fool proof. Lots of coons have been found with lights before the thermal owner finds it with it. Coons still have to be seen without it so I'm not sure what some of you think the big deal is. In another kennel club where they are allowed some people have one and some don't. Sometimes thermal imaging help the handler find a coon and sometimes they don't. I've never heard anyone whine someone else had something they don't.

Seems pretty straight forward to me. They cannot be used to score a tree, which includes plussing or minusing a tree. They’re only an aid to help where to focus on looking if your fortunate enough to have the thermal find heat.

Any different than using a squaller?

Good point although there would be variables or differences to consider. I'm all about opportunities to score dogs as accurately as possible. Would thermals help? Maybe so.

It's a proposal that we have had a lot of support for and also some opposed. I've asked a lot of questions to those using them where they are permitted and do get some varying responses although the majority leans towards permitting their use. Those opposed generally have no problem stating why they oppose, and can see some of those arguments as well.

Like most anything, there are pros and cons. Would be good to see some of those pro and con lists to look at. Not being fair to all would land on the con side but IMO holds little value. How about cons like.... you have an obvious sensor alert; how many are quick to use that alone as "yes, i see the coon" type scenarios? This is the big one that has come from those opposed who have participated where they are permitted. That and handlers going to split trees alone and checking the area a little to make sure they tie the dog to better tree. But I think I have a good rule proposal to make that a non-factor.

Posted by 2ol2hunt on 05-13-2021 05:32 PM:

Since the rules are based on the honor system......you either see the coon or you don't....it's just that simple. With or without a thermal unit.

Let me get this right...

More than 35% in a registry that requires plus to win a cast don’t want a thermal used.

Fair? Can or cant buy? Get over it. What next, change things cause someone cant afford a good dog and they lose all the time? Get over it or stay home.

.

This being the KC that the cast require PLUS points to advance. Why would anyone that firmly believe in that. Not want every device possible to help find the coon.

Thermal

It’s just a tool same as a squaller. Still gotta see the coon with out it. It should definitely be aloud. As far as not everyone having one that can’t be helped. I look at it like this if I wanna use one I’ll buy one. I don’t expect a hunter that just spent a $1000 plus on a piece of equipment to just volunteer it to me. If they do great but if not I don’t blame them at all. If they do become legal with that should come the cast remains together.

Here's a question? If they can't be used to score a tree, what is the purpose of having one? I have one and it is about worthless as tits on a boar hog. Down south the trees hold way to much heat to use effectively. The whole tree is red right now. WORTHLESS to me, but I don't really care one way or the other.
