How to keep dogs cool in dog box with truck cap

Question for you guys that have hauled dogs in back of truck with cap on truck.

I’m from upstate NY
(only warm/hot from June - September)

I own a full size 2 hole houndsman deluxe dog box with top storage.

I just bought a used Toyota Tundra with ARE truck vault drawer system and an ARE cap with sliding side windows.

**I took the lid off my top storage of houndsman deluxe dog box in order to fit it in the truck with cap on.

My idea is to mount roof vent fans in the storage compartment of the dog box over each hole and let the hot air suck out of the box and hopefully out the side windows of the truck cap??

***my question is will this most likely work or should I think of something else? There is info on retriever and bird dog forums, but nothing that is exactly like I’m asking

I don’t want to take the cap off the truck and I really like my dog box and have a lot of great memories with it..

Thanks for any replies and advice.

I'd definitely recommend fans of some sort to keep air flowing. I'd think radiator fans would work well, should be waterproof and 12v. Keep the sliders open as well.

One thing I've done when it's hot is take a gallon jug of water and freeze it. Then secure it inside box. It should help lower temp a bit, dog can also lick the cold condensation on it.

If fan is set to blow down, we've put bags of ice on top of fan and let it blow cold air down into dog box. (think most elec fans can be reversed by reversing current, but I'm no electrician)

Nice truck. I loved and hated having a cap on my last one. I'll prob have a cap on next one. Be nice to have a system to take off/put on easily.

I used to just freeze gallon jugs and bungee them to the inside of the box....it melts as you go and you have cold water for the dogs.

Ok.. sounds like ice in the box and keep the air moving.
Thank You for the replies
