Early weaned pups

Have you had any experience weaning pups at 4-5 weeks old. If so how did it work out?

5 weeks .....is my norm, no issues here.

Iv seen pups weaned at 3 weeks.( Not by choice) and all pups survive. Obviously I wouldn't recommend this.

Thanks for the reply. Just never weaned any that early. Planning to buy a pup that they are going to wean at 5 weeks and was a little concerned. When would you give the first shot? Always gave it at 6 weeks but will it make any difference if the pup is already weaned?

Need to have first shot before leaving there mom, I ween my pups at 5 weeks old but have them eating good puppy food by then and first shot

I just purchased two pups that were weaned at 5 weeks old (I was not told that they had been, only found out upon arrival for pick up) and they both developed severe cases of rickets. Both pups had to be heavily supplemented and "vetted" to bring them back. I'm very fortunate they didn't sustain any kind of injury while they were recovering.

8 weeks is really the magic number, so long as your female can support it and it isn't a medical emergency.

I don't believe it is good in those early weaned pups
Weaned and litter separated

Most of those early weaned are the owner is anxious to get their mitts on those bills and relieved of the headache of feeding and cleaning noisy pups gone

One huge reason.
Pups that stay with mom and littermates will be better socialized adjusted when going to their new homes

They learn their teeth are sharp and won't gnaw on you.
They learn manners from mom if they get out of line because she will cuff them when they need it.

And you as the breeder if you are doing your job will correct any possessive nasty food bowl hogs that will help later in life to learn they have to share their space

It is illegal in most states to sell a pup before it is 8 weeks old. Most of they gyps I have had typically cut’m off around 5 weeks or so, but they should stay together a couple more weeks if possible.

I read in a few different places that 49 days is the best time to separate them. But I have one here that never saw her mom and she's very good. There were 11 in this litter, all bottle raised, and I know of a few others that are above average.
