Garmin Alpha "running pointers"?

So instead of a dog icon on my screen, I've got a little arrow that points the direction the dog is moving. I can go to the map page and select running pointers on or off and it makes no difference. Suggestions?
Full disclosure, this coincides with me having run over my handheld with a lawnmower recently. The antenna was a casualty, but the unit itself seems fine besides this?

while on the map page hit three little bars on the bottom and select show dog status.
