Hunting a pup 30 straight nights

I’ve seen people say they will hunt a pup 30 straight nights. I’ve never done that or tried it, but I always assumed you could burn one out if they weren’t ready. I don’t have time to hunt one that much so I would naturally have some breaks. Is it better to hunt it that much that quick or give it breaks every few nights?

Every pup is different, and everybody’s definition of a pup varies as well.

I talked to a guy years ago how he hunted his pups . He consistently make GRNT's at 2 years old This is back when a NT CH or GRNT title was the talk of area. 50-70 dogs in hunts.
Any way. that is what he did. When they are treeing their own coon he hunted them 30 straight nights and tried to give them a coon once every night.
I know many will dispute but his reasoning was how hard would you keep at your job if your boss never paid you? His reasoning was pay them with a coon for doing their job.
Hey worked for him .That's a fact.

I think the 30 days would be more pointed toward finishing one out.

Just throwing number against the wall from past experiences I say most dogs over year old could handle 30 nights straight. But just as someone mention all pups are different so is what one person calls a night of hunting and another. If I wanted tree coon knock it out and call it a night most nights would be pretty short hunt I know this much you have set pup up for success.

30 straight nights

Common sense tells me if you hunt one 30 straight nights it only helps. More experience means better dog. Also will get one in hunting shape. If it don't work your dog probably wasn't worth a sh** to begin with. Please don't tell me all dog's are different because if it takes two or three years for one to start I don't want it or would I feed one that took that long. Old saying practice makes perfect. Well it may not make them perfect but it will definitely let you know what you got. When you see ad's on here for a two or three year old started dog, you know they are worthless. Few exception's would be one that never was hunted or given a chance.
If HUNTING hurts a HUNTING dog, TAKE THEM OVER THE HILL AND BLOW THEIR BRAINS OUT.

P.S. Most will never hunt 30 nights straight. All kinds of excuses. Wife, kids, sports, something else is more important. I known a lot of coon hunters over the years. Less then ten ever hunted 30 straight nights.

Personally I don't think you can hunt one to much, dogs are tougher than people, you'll wear out before the dog will, a good dog enjoys being in the woods and usually just gets stronger the more you hunt him.

In either 1997 or 1998 I hunted over 300 nights. There were a couple of 30 night stretches in there. We had crappy dogs when we started, and crappy tired dogs when we finished.
Theres a big difference in pups, young dogs, and finished stuff with regard to what they can handle and what's good for them. Can they handle it? Most can, but not all. Do they benefit from 30 straight nights? I dont really think so.

As I've grown a little longer in the tooth, I've come to realize that with pups and young started dogs it's about quality hunts, not quantity of hunts. Two or three good hunts a week that maximize opportunities for success are way better for a pup than going 30 nights straight, independent of conditions. On an old dog it can sure sharpen them up, but it seems like some have a tipping point where they go backwards. And at that point about all you can do is put them in the pen awhile.

When talking about whether dog can handle 30 nights straight has nothing to do with physical side of it. It all depends on maturity level of dog some mature and are over puppy stage at 10 months some at 16 months. My boy loves baseball and would play every day and older he gets hard a coach can push him. Lots difference from hunting 10 month old pup a drop a night for 30 nights and putting 10 miles on a dog 30 nights straight. I agree 30 nights straight only make a dog better that is at the point to be pushed. But at what age and stage the dog is makes all difference on how much a dog improves. But realistically very very few people will ever hunt young dog enough to set them back.

Quality over quantity with young dog every time! Have to set them up for success. There is big difference between hunting and training a dog.

The best advice I was ever gave was “pay attention to your dog” that has taught me when to hunt him and when to not. 30 straight nights is for a dog that’s in shape in my opinion. It’s about like working out, you jump out there and go to weight lifting, that first week your body is gonna be broke down. When the body is broke down your more acceptable to catching a cold and getting sick. Same I feel goes for a dog. The right amount of hunt/rest to me is the most important not only in my life but my dogs. I have hunted 30 nights straight, 60 nights straight and some 90 nights straight. But I’ve only had 1 dog in my time that could take it and he didn’t have a brain. So now I pay attention to my dog. When he’s about gave out I give him one more night and then I rest him. It’s called PUSHING them to be better!!
