Blueticks with 1 Blue eye.
I have a litter of 8 Blueticks, 3 have 1 Blue eye(sometimes called glass eye or white eye), I know it is a recessive gene, any info?
glass eye
the glass eye/chalk eye/watch eye is in most lines of bluetick hounds.
thru the years there were several of those that were very good cooners and were bred thus spreading the genetics around. one place that it can cause problems is if there is a merle gene associated with it and then a mating is made with a pair of them. there is a strong possibility of deafness with that combination.
the first one I seen many years ago was a fellow had a female with a glass eye that got bred by accident to her full brother that was a Nite CH-- this was in the 1960's. one pup was born with 2 glass eyes. a fellow I knew got him as a puppy and the dog was a natural cooner but stone cold DEAF...-- my brother got one that was deaf in one ear and was a good cooner but he sure had to trail you up when you were ready to quit hunting.
I know of a few other instances that there were a few with one glass eye and a half mask face that were deaf in one ear....
for those reasons if and when one shows up I would eliminate it from the project.
Re: glass eye
quote:I am wondering about health problems. The Sire is a 50 pound, started on Coon and will track Bear but goes to the truck as soon as he sees the Bear. The Dam is a 60 pound Show Champion, started on coon. The pups are small and petite. They look like they are going to be very small. 1 is gritty, very vocal and destructive, the others seems to be shy or timid. I am not sure about this litter. Thanks for the info.

No health problems whatsoever. I've had/seen several through the years, including raising (to a year old) the 2017 high scoring bluetick of the UKC world hunt, (Chalk Eyes) who has 2 white eyes and I've never seen anything different about them over any other dog, except their eyes glow different colors in a light and perhaps coincidentaly all I've seen have made above average hunters!
