Coondog Paralyzes

Is there any long term affects from this?

it is likely when your dog gets bit by a coon again they will have another bout with it but not always... so be sure that you roll the coons out grave yard dead. I would sure keep some antibiotics on hand just in case.

sometimes

Nathan sometimes there is and sometimes there isn't. I do not think there is a scientific reason why. I have seen some dog's make a full recovery and you would never know the ever even had it. Others never made a recovery and had to be put down.
I had a jack russell get it twice. The only long term effect was when he laid down he had his legs bent at the knees up under him and it looked awkward. This was the same position he laid in while he was paralyzed. I often wondered if I had straightened them out more when he was paralyzed if this would have still happened. The vet told us to put him down when he got it the second time. She said he would never recover from it the second time. Well he recovered, killed hundreds of more things from mice to coyotes and lived to be 14.
Don't give up on him or her. I've seen it take up to five months before they start walking again. Hopefully you killed the coon that had it or it will pass it to another dog. Hope it makes a full recovery.

Paralysis.....

My Dad had a Walker that came down with it after being bitten by a Coon.......for 1 Solid Month she couldnt move and he had to Feed her and turning her several times a day. It was a horrible job to take care of her. She recovered from It but came down with it 2 years later and that time died from it.
I try to shoot them out dead now and not let the Hound get bitten. Not worth the chance.
Good Luck.

Had a friend that had one with it recently. He hand fed , gave electrolytes, turned him 4 or 5 times a day, and babied him for 5 weeks. Finally had to put him down.

I bought a 2 year old female back out of litter I raised that suppose to have had it. Have hunted her once didnt see anything that seemed off except. Her mouth was good start out with. Then part way threw night she didnt seem as loud (might been terrain or in my head) but by end of night she seemed as loud as first of the night.
