Kash And Ol' Red

I don't know how the cast at our RQE are doing tonight but Red treed one for Kash tonight. The guys are all out hunting and Kash wanted to go tonight so he and I came home and he caught Red put him on a leash and informed me we were going hunting. We walked him a ways into the timber across from our house. After cutting him loose we found a log made sure it was snake free and sat down for a little visit waiting on Red to get struck. In just a couple of minutes he opened and started working a track towards my neighbor's back woods. Kash told me we need to tighten up on him and walk that way. The old man worked him about 800 yards and came treed on a giant oak. To tell the truth towards the end of the track I thought he had probably struck a deer but Kash assured me that no Nana was wrong and it is a coon he is running! Shortly after Ol' Red fell treeded and Kash left me in the dust running through the timber, nothing like the excitement in a child. He tripped and fell one time hopped right up and on he went. I started shining on my way in realizing he is up a big oak and we have no squaller but from a stroke of luck the coon was laying out in the open and looked right at me. With no Garmin on us Kash is learning the ways of the woods and knew his way back too. I've got a happy 7 year old boy and an even happier old dog tonight. This is what coon hunting is all about ... making memories.
Prehunt pic all biz ready to go.

We had a blast ! I'm so grateful that all our grandbabies live so close that we get to see them nearly every day so many grandparents do not have this luxury. Many say it's the little things in life that make it worth it. To me these are the big things. Glad we got to put a smile on a few faces with Kash and Red's hunting story and yes he does have that Cummings pose down pat lol!

Nice pic, I have seen that look before. It is amazing what they pick up on and emulate. You are starting him off right with a Red dog. It is amazing how many older big time handlers tell me that their first dog was a Redbone.

Nice pics & story

Looks like that pair will be ready for Redbone Days. Been lucky to have 2 grandkids close so we can spend time in woods with dogs. Take care, Ron.

Kash and Red

Priceless is the right word, money could not buy the memories being created by a loving grandmother, a willing boy and an old dog. Jen you are correct in saying that these are not little things, but are big things, they sure are big in Kash's eyes and that's what matters. Experiences like this are building blocks for success in our children's lives. Dave

Great stuff

Great photos and story. Ol Red has that look of experience. This is the kind of dog every young person should learn to love the sport with. Most people start kids out with a pup. Kids are more likely to stick with it, if they had a dog like this. I'm sure the dog is having about as much fun as the kid.

Of course there is a story to how Ol' Red came to be with a family full of Walkers lol. Ten years ago Cheyenne and his dad got on some kind of a trade as dad had a dog that Cheyenne wanted but there was a kicker to the deal he had to take Red too. Red is of unknown origin and unknown age at the time Chey figured him to be around the same age Mafia and was 3-4 by looking at his teeth. Chey had no use for an unpapered possibly half breed hound but momma and the kids did lol. Red had been a product of traders row. One look at this little bit shy hound dog who needed a good dose of TLC I knew he had found his forever home whether Chey agreed or not he was staying. At the time we were living on a highway and he finally said if you can keep him alive running loose here on this highway he's yours because he didn't have the space to free up a pen for him. Red's new life began. He needed a good worming and a plenty of vittles and a place to call home. Red got hit a couple of times on that highway but always eventually made it back sometimes after being gone for days. He was always taking off to take himself hunting sometimes getting treed and sometimes running deer or anything thing else that laid a track. He would take off just about anytime he was outside and still does to this day. He ended up with a permanent limp from his days back then that actually made him the perfect speed for what his new job would be. Shortly after we got him we moved back home to our house in the woods down a dead end dirt lane where we've lived nearly 20 years and a much safer place for Red. Red has always been an indoor/outdoor dog he comes in to sleep by our bed and then by the fire in the winter and goes out to chase the critters as he chooses, the perfect hound dog life you could say. His gentle disposition and being just gamey enough made him perfect to start pups with that run loose here. Ol' Red has started literally 100's of pups over the years. I've seen him more times than I could ever count wait on pups to catch up with him leaving the yard to head to the woods taking them hunting. He occasionally if trying to nap will give them the leave me alone bark if they get to chewing on his ears or tail. As I mentioned before we've always just let him do his thing which he believes to to run or tree any thing within a mile radius of home. Critter elimination you could call it. Some may disagree with our methods letting puppies out with a dog like this or never breaking him from off game but we've found it to work just fine.
Ol' Red is known throughout the neighborhood by his name where several of them leave the table scraps (his chosen diet) out their backdoors one even has a bed in their garage in case he wants to spend the night lol. Speaking of table scraps at dinnertime if the grandkids are here he has to be inside waiting because he knows food is snuck to him. Just tonight when Dalton's youngest Kase had finished his dinner he insisted on giving the rest to Red. Strangely enough for a dog that came from traders row he has always had impeccable house manners and minds like I wish my kids did! We never had to house break him Dalton just brought him in, probably on the first day I rescued him, and in all these years he only had one accident in the house.
Red is one of those dogs with a sweet disposition that you can't help but love. He is the dog that when I've done youth events that I use to teach the kids triage on basic emergency skills and dog care. They've pretended to worm him and cleaned and wrapped not there wounds all while he wags his tail.
When I guide cast here we have to swing by the house to lock him in because if not he will beat you to the hunting spot on the farm. Many of times I've had guys ask if I could turn him back loose to help the dogs out on a bad night lol.
Ol' Red is a yard dog / house dog / pup trainer / lover of his family and all children.
Jen

I wish everyone could have an ol red at least once in their life, he sounds like what's missing from a lot of folks lives. Thank GOD for children, old dogs and people that care about others. Dave p.s. maybe a little watermelon wine. Lol.

I have been telling everyone that they need a good Redbone for a long time but they don't believe me. If you want a dog that is fun to hunt, smart, good looking, fun to have around the house and will tree a bunch of coons get yourself a Redbone pup. Maybe they will listen to Jen. It sounds like she is pretty smart.
