Strange dogs
I have a 2 year cross bred dog that I raised from a pup, he was treeing his own coon by himself at 7 months old but the more I hunted him I saw he wasn't getting any better just was never going to be nothing but a average dog. I have gave him a way 2 times just to see him return both people say he won't tree a coon. But I carry him and he trees coons. Both say he won't do for them. Any thoughts?
He likes you and nobody else...
Most dogs that have been anywhere any length of time have to make up with the new owner before they will operate right. Many still go hunting and tree coons but maybe not with the same pizazz at first. Some need more time than others to do anything. That all being said some of you have heard Cheyenne mention his old dog named Spider he hunted for years he was a coondog night in night out in any conditions and makes the top or very near of any dog he has ever owned or hunted with. He didn't just get better after he died, one of only 2 we've buried, he was that good alive and hunted like he likes one to now 20 years ago. Chey hunted with the Mailes brothers but especially Kevin nearly every night and he had hunted with Spider 100's of times so he knew him well. Kevin kept wanting to buy him (he is die hard blue and Spider was a Walker) and Cheyenne eventually gave in to the money. Spider absolutely would not go hunting for him if Chey wasn't along. We had to buy him back and glad to as he had regretted selling him in the first place and kept him until he died. So this dog knew his new owner well and wouldn't hunt for him at all.
Dogs choose people and it sounds like yours has chosen you even if you haven't him lol. Many who are partners on dogs will tell you certain ones just do better for one partner or the other. Dogs are alot smarter than most give them credit for. It may be that if someone kept him long enough maybe he would make up with them and start hunting and treeing coons for them.

I have coon hunted and fox hunted with hounds my whole life (since the 1970's) . One thing I have noticed tree dogs always seem to have a strange quirk about them where running dogs don't (most of them anyway). Do you think tree dogs are smarter which gives that quirky thing about them. And yes I live in Arkansas but I'm from Louisiana orginally which makes me even more crazy my family think so as no one in my family hunts.
Strange dogs
I bought a good black n tan female a few years back I bought her under the tree 3 drops 3 singles I took her home and it's was a month 30 days before she ever did anything for me she was prolly a good a hound as I ever owned, I wish you were closer I could use a average dog right now , this young dog is killing me!
I’ve seen quite a few cur dogs that won’t hunt for anyone except for the original owner...once they accept you they will start and usually takes 4 or 5 hunts until they get back to their top form...
