How important is mouth to you?

How important is it to everyone for a dog to have a "loud" or a "good" mouth. Could you stand to hunt a dog with a weak mouth if it was a good coon tree'er?

Why would I spend so much time and money on something I didn’t enjoy to Listen to? I already have a wife for that.

Important to me. An observation: I don't hear very many blues with a mouth I'd consider good, maybe I'm just missing the nice mouth ones

As you get older, mouth gets more and more important.

Mouths

A good clear mouth is a must prefer a big bawl or squawl mouth any dog with a course flat mouth would not interest me and would be culled

I have to have one with some pitch to it. A big squall or screaming type mouth is what I prefer. Those big houndy bawl mouth track dogs all blend in to me when they get deep.

I want a bawl or squall mouth track dog and I don't care if he chops or bawls on the tree as long as there is a good change up. The most important thing though like Dalton said is a pitch that will stand out and echo out of the hollow. Dog can bawl, squall or scream but it needs to stand out.

One I can hear it don't have to be pretty but a pitch I can hear while standing in the dark listening having an unusual mouth don't hurt either

I'd say it depends on how far you like for a dog to hunt on how loud you want it to be. If you're a walk along type you don't need a big mouth. But if you want a dog to hunt until it finds a track it needs a bigger mouth so you can hear it. I've had a few that you could hear very well at 1.5 miles. And I've only had 1 dog that had a weak mouth you couldn't hear over 800. But like Dalton said a unique mouth is preferred.

since I am hearing impaired it is critical to me.i need one I can hear with my hearing aids anything I can hear over 800 yds is good doesn't hurt if they have a different pitch too.I have a youngster here with a horn on him hoping he turns out well time will tell

I learned years ago that if you have an outstanding hound (ability wise) with a poor mouth (tone wise not volume) it can become the prettiest sound a hound man could ever want to hear! 😉

We ALL like a good mouth, but as you said if the dogs good enough , we tend to enjoy their mouth no matter, or at least I do. Lol. Dave

I would cull a poor volume mouth quick. The louder the better. Bawl chop squall doesn't matter.

The right hunt in the dog takes priority over the right mouth any day...a loud chop mouth is exciting and with a loud locating ball mouth I like...

I have a dog right now that has a better mouth of any dog I ever owned...almost twice as loud as his siblings...doesn’t bark on track much...the locate isn’t much different but then there isn’t much room left for louder locate...I don’t like bawl on track but I sure like it on locate and then rolling over to a loud chop...

I also like three chops on locating a good track and then shutting up until the hog is running...a bark now and then after that is ok...if the Garmin shows treed it’s a caught hog...

Training dogs is not so much about quantity, it's more about timing, and the right situations...After that it's up to the dog....A hunting dog is born...

I like a good mouth, but them pelts are more important to me. Don’t wake the neighbors up...just lie to them 🤷🏼‍♂️

It is a must for me for a dog to have a good mouth. I can’t hear very well and our woods are thick which makes it even harder to hear a dog up here.
Some hounds voices carry better then others though no matter how good there volume is

Mouth

Most folks definitely want a good mouth, I am no exception. I do think most of us would take a Top COON DOG with a fair mouth any day of the week. A man once told me that he did not care if the dog crowed like a rooster if the dog was a sure enough coon dog, and I agree with him. Dave

Ability, desire, conformation, biddability, disposition,etc. are a lot harder to bring in then voice in my opinion. I'm not saying I don't desire a hound that is pleasant to listen to but it's far lower on my list then the things I've listed.

Doesnt matter to me what a dog sounds like as long as it has a coon at the end. That dont mean i dont like hearing one run track and tree just means i dont care how it sounds doing it. Heck im training a treeing feist to coon hunt right now. Yelp yelp yelp. Lol

Seems to me the reason for wanting a dog with a loud carrying mouth has always simply been so that we can hear them especially at a long distance. Now this does not discount the pleasure of hearing a dog with a mouth we like but the real reason is so I can hear him. So yes mouth is important to me.

With hunting land shrinking, I would think mouth will slowly become less important. A really loud mouth may actually get you in trouble.

Just a potentially different view point.

Personally, I like a decent mouth, but I don't need a super loud dog. In fact, every time through the years I heard about a super loud dog, I went to see the dog. Each time the dog was hoarse.
