# of Hunts
With all of the sky is falling hysteria due to some clubs raising entry fees for the new year. I’m curious about a couple questions. 1- How many hunts does the average person attend a year. Not just UKC but any registry you hunt in 2- what does the average person spend on entry’s a year? Not just UKC any registry you hunt in 3-What does the average person spend on fuel pleasure hunting a month. 4- What does the average person spend on coonhunting a year ( including equipment, feed, medications etc.). The $5.00 increase just seems insignificant compared to the overall investment. Especially with the new hunt announced with a good pay out.

Your thoughts are correct, hunt fees are nothing compared to the actual cost of owning coonhounds and coonhunting. Cost of dogs, feed, equipment, gas, wear and tear on hunting vehicles, going to a Hunt is most likely the least cost a coonhunters has. I spend more on dog feed in a month than going to 4 or 5 hunts would cost. My dog food cost around 250.00 a month , now I may have more dogs than some do, but dog food isn't cheap. My feed bill per month for horses costs a lot more, hobbies are expensive, coon hunting is one of the cheaper hobbies, but it's not cheap. Dave

Good questions here.
But, the so-called new hunt with a good pay-out is irrelevant to most (almost all) hunters. I think that this is reverse Robin Hood theory, rob from the poor (the local hunters that won't take time off work, and spend the money to travel across the country for a hunt) to benefit the rich (those that can take time off and spend the money on a big trip). Of course, if you live close to where the hunt will be held, it's a little different.
Why not just let those that want to enter this type of hunt foot the bill? It worked for the Russ Meyer Invitational!!!
I agree with the backwards robin hood story. The New big hunt makes no difference to me. I don't even want to figure up the cost of my coon hunting, pleasure or competition hunting. Doesn't matter what it cost I either enjoy it and feel it's worth it or find something else to enjoy.
I am heading to work but here is a thought :
If it takes you 10 cast to get qualified for the big show that’s $50 extra that you wouldn’t have spent other wise and you will have ntch your dog or have 5 wins tword grntch. I haven’t heard what the zone fee will be but it’s my understanding if get through the zone you make the top 64 you get $1,200. That ain’t a bad investment.
If I am wrong the staff can correct me.

I haven’t even looked or seen anything on the new hunt. All I know is something about I think it’s 5 cast wins to qualify correct me if I’m wrong. How many people go to 12-15 hunts a year trying to nite champion a dog or grand one. How many people travel to a RQE and don’t make the cut. So then what do they do they go to another qualifier. How many have had to go to multiple qualifiers to get in. Now what compensation did you get for that to help with expenses to keep rolling. Nada , zilch now you have a chance to at the least cover partial expenses and some will actually make a little money. Which some with that extra will now be able to go to more hunts they may not of normally of been able to swing due to finances.
Oh my goodness, no one is going to answer the original question? I guess that either people on this forum don't actually go to hunts or they aren't very good at math.
Let's see...
Competition
2 Redbone Days...$500 ea
Grand American...$500
Winter Classic...$500
Autumn Oaks...$500
Purina Nationals...$500
2 or 3 RQE's...$100
1 or 2 local hunts/month x $25= $450
So about $3,500 a year
That is awfully cheap I think.

I got to thinking and came up with some #'s for pleasure hunting....
Dog food...$150/mo or $1,800/yr
Gas for local hunting...$10/night, 4 nights/wk = $2,000/yr
Pleasure hunting "trips"....$250 ea times 8/yr or $2,000
That is $5,800/yr that I spend pleasure hunting or almost $10,000/yr total. Since my SS is only $16,800, I guess that it is a good thing that I have an IRA. I sure am thankful for President Trump and that I had the foresight to save when I was young and working.
Pricing on pups and started dogs and finished dogs
This just means that the price of started and finished hounds will go up. That's next. You can't do it for free.

Your posts speak mostly about the money it cost to coon hunt, every hobby has a dollar cost, coon hunting is no exception. Coon hunting should be about the enjoyment whether it's pleasure hunting or competition hunting. If you only consider what it costs to coon hunt, this sport may not be the right hobby for you. My costs are very high, but my pleasure can not be measured in money spent, it is something I consider to be priceless. Dave

These money hunts no matter who is hosting is a benefit to anyone that is capable of taking a pup to a almost finished or to a finished dog.....You can sale the pup or hunt the pup for purses that were unimaginable just a few years back..Its putting our sport on a whole new level..The young man that just won 70,000 plus in the last six weeks wasnt sitting at home worrying about the cost of a entry..Our sport has evolved where its many ways to earn a little money back from handling, training or hunting your own and winning..Ive gotten to old and slow to compete at a high level the same with my ball playing ability but I sure do still like to watch a great game and I absolutely love to watch a play by play or one of the guys live feeds hunting.

This year I spent $1600 on entry fees. I won $1400 back. I went to 11 hunts, and in those 11 hunts I took part in 19 casts.

Have you honestly been cheated a lot? I’m not saying it doesn’t happen ,but some would lead you to believe it happens on every cast. I think the idea of this hunt is a good one. The cost is minimal if a $5 increase to go to a hunt is deal breaker don’t stop before work and get coffee for a week. Pack a lunch one day instead of eating out. There I fixed the $5 increase.
Well hears what I think is happening. Most of the clubs that are charging a bunch more for the hunts are looking at the profits that are going to be made compared to before. So the profit used to be $12 (correct me if I'm wrong) a dog but now its $5 a dog. They're charging more to make $12 a dog instead of just $5 more per entry. Maybe I'm wrong but it doesn't seem so.
