There are lots of hounds that can tree a coon, but COON DOGS are pretty rare.

Tyler when I was your age my name was in the back of the book a lot. Reason why a lot of old folks don’t have big life time winnings is because they didn’t have big $$$ hunts as much. We was happy winning ada Oklahoma or the Texas state hunt where there was 350 dogs. We didn’t have 12 dog hunts were you could win $4,000.

Don’t think that there are not some good top notch dogs out there that some old guys own that couldn’t kick your butt in a coon treeing contest without using rules just coon for coon what most call a winner most old guys wouldn’t feed. They just don’t get hauled and tons of entry’s paid on them.

So having a 12 dog hunt should be cake right? Why wouldn't you just jump right in the middle of them and take some of their money? I don't have much in my kennel, and I'm sure yours is stacked after all these years. You should come out and play sometimes!

Mike call jimmy Davis in Ardmore ask about rusty he is an xbred he hasn’t been hunted a lot lately but he will punch a hole in the dark and tree coon after coon. He can be bought he can out hunt his mouth the only fault he has and he can run I mean run a cold coon.

Mr. Brown you know well enough that yes there are some nice coondogs in the state of Oklahoma along with every other type from dogs that can tree coons, mediocre and subpar, no different than any other state in the union. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder what some consider great may be different than what you do and vice versa. Most people do not have the time to take random people hunting so that they can evaluate and critique. Many don't mind taking someone along who just wants to have a good time going hunting in the sport they love. By commenting on super stars you just eliminated most anyone who would consider letting someone tag along as your intentions are wrong lean towards the critique and evaluate.

Swing and miss

Redneck Mafia, you’ve completely missed the boat on this one. I’m not here to criticize, or critique anyone’s hounds. That’s something I’ve never done, and never will do.

The intentions of this post is to find a good coon treer, and go enjoy good company watching the hound tree live ringtails.

First of all I have only owned two coondogs in 40 yrs one was a $$$ world champion I bought the other I seen born and I raised and trained him I had them both at the same time. Neither needed a super handler you just call them as they did you put them in coons they treed them they just didn’t have bad nights in coon country they were indifferent to what the other dogs did. I have descendants of them now they are not even close mostly because I don’t hunt like I used to when the deep and alone style of dogs started many of the older ones quit competing it’s just not fun dogs out hunting your legs and ears and trying to compete against those that have an unlimited expense account. So us old doggies lost our goals to push a dog enough to make it a coondog. But even that word coondog might have a different meaning nowadays. When we won those 350 dog hunts you didn’t win them with plan B. No minus, circle slicks, deep and alone one coon cast winners. That same dog that you won those hunts with might make you a $1,000 during hide season and that was a lot of money back then. All it costed you was gas to go.

Apology accepted!

Tar, I’d like to hunt with a Bozz again! It’s my opinion the good one’s are generational, and very few out there. I just want to hunt with another one!

I got nothing even close. But if you just want to go tree coons me and Ralph can hook you up. Your welcome anytime mike. That dog of jimmys is just setting in the pen he has started hunting curs of a morning on mule back. Trees a lot of coons with them. I won’t out walk you and the coffee and snacks ain’t bad either.

One thing that gets an old doggie fired up is when you mention a dog and the younger ones say how much money they won ? We all know ole rat throwed summertime dogs. Don’t ever hear nobody ask about his pups no more lol.

Tar

I am going to agree with you, the measure of a coon dog IS NOT how much money it has won. The best dogs that I have ever seen or hunted with NEVER won any money, they were never hunted in the money hunts. They could fill the barn or freezer with hides and did so. I have tried to own the best I could find over the past 50 years and I can only say that 3 of them were what I call a coon dog. My hunting partner has hunted and owned many good dogs, but he says he has only had 3 that he called a coon dog. Combined, that is 110 years of hunting and only 6 digs that we called coon dogs, either we don't know a coon dog or they are not very many that fit the bill. I suspect the latter and I believe this holds true where ever one lives. Those that know the difference will agree. Dave

Ya'll talkin about Pakota Lake Bozz? If it is, and you ever hunted him at the Battle of the Breeds, I bet I was on a cast with you...

You might even remember it. I was a tall skinny kid hunting a black and white walker dog, and we were tied or close to it late in the hunt. Mine almost never opened on the ground and I knew I had to get struck ahead of you to win the cast. We had turned loose down a ditch on the edge of a Pecan Grove, and I didn't mention it, but I had already seen a coon sitting up about a hundred yards away. I knew we were gonna get treed together, and figured I was about to get beat on strike points. Not proud to admit it, but I pitched mine when something squeaked right in front of the cast.
About as soon as I struck mine in front of the cast, he located a tree across the road behind the truck, directly behind us! He'd slipped around and was 180 degrees from where I pitched him, and where I just knew he was gonna be.
I took my medicine and that was that...

I think Ryan crowson was hunting for me that night but it might have been me I don’t remember lol. I think I was hunting deacon that night.

Scott I pmd you his number.

Posted by Cory Highfill on 08-02-2019 01:00 AM:

Wasn't Ryan. Don't really know him, but know who he is well enough to recognize him.

The Bozz dog won our cast that night, whoever hunted him. He had some wheels under him and a pretty good mouth if I remember correctly.

I pitched that sucker of mine like a major leaguer! Those lessons bought and paid for tend to stick with me more than any easy come cast win...
