Southern National Redbone Days

R.I.P.

The Board Of Directors voted to not have Southern Redbone Days any more. This is the end of an era. This is a sad day but I guess that time marches on. I have many great memories from this hunt. It was a hunt that us Southern Boys could go to. I met and made many of my coonhunting friends there. The Virginia Cartel got their start there.

With my condition at home I know I have not been as supportive as I would like with the Asso but this really come to me as a shock. So sorry the boys in the North only want us to come up there. They have SouthEastern Walker days at Union , SC and have some great scores there. It might all be winding down. Who knows. I have met alot of great people up there so we will see.

Very sad news. I too have met some great redbone men there. It was nice to have a national event within 4 hours of home. Nothing to look forward to in Feb now.

This was the first red hunt I attended a few years ago. Made a lot of friends at Southern days.

Of course, but Richard couldn't kick up another pot to stir if he shared all the facts.

I hate it too, but sitting there melting and fighting with fireworks all week...again, and noticing the decline in attendance...again, and recalling the pitiful turnout to southern days in Feb of this year, I was in favor of moving the date of National Days to April, which in turn forced the cancellation of southern days for 2020. Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I could see it being revamped, under the same title, but with an early fall date. And upon suggestion of Jared Hutchenson, a committee was formed in attempt to accomplish that exact purpose.

So...stay tuned.

Actually, they decided to cancel Southern Days before they ever voted to move NRD's. And the "new" hunt will be a Fall Roundup held in Oct, Nov or December.and held anywhere in the country, not necessarily in the Southeast. .

It was discussed, then the discussion went onto moving NRD's and a presentation from Jared about a location and a date for NRD. Once the board said yes, move NRD to April, obviously SRD for 2020 had to be cancelled with no immediate plans in the works to finalize a fall date/location/etc. I could go on to explain some fellas did contact a club in middle TN for a different southern days location to try and pump some new life into that hunt, but when that bid came in, it was quite ridiculous in mine and everyone else's opinion, so that didn't help. The association has apparently always been setup that the SRD meeting's were almost pointless as final decisions are only made at NRD. So the fact the "south" pulls less weight is nothing new, and it certainly does NOT help when the turnout at southern days is next to nothing. And, Richard, I've never been to a big redbone hunt and not seen you there, so now that you're on the executive board, maybe you'll also chime in there and be heard and help balance some southern representation. Or even help find a good club in middle TN that'll let us hold an event in the fall.

If I have to drive 6hrs north east I don't consider it to be south lol, but I would happily drive 3 more hrs north to brazil for better hunting and cooler temps.

Actually the association has been losing thousands on this hunt the past few years .....that's right...it has been losing money. And when we opened up bids from other clubs across the south it was going to cost us thousands more in losses. Why should the association subsidize a money losing hunt year after year so that the few people who do show up for it can walk away with lots of prizes and other benefits but does nothing to help prop up the association?
I like the hunt also...been there several times and won some every time....but as a board member I have to consider the greater good of the association. Participation and entries has been steadily dwindling over the years. It's not sustainable anymore in its current form. The same is becoming true for every event we hold and this is the reason for the changes the association is making. Nobody wants to see any redbone hunts go away....but we cant sustain these big losses year after year and remain a viable association. We have a lot of new board members with a lot of new and good ideas on how to maximize turn out, entries, and hopefully turn a profit at the end of the year. We are actively discussing options and trading ideas to make things better going forward. Nobody likes change...but we are being forced to adapt to falling entry numbers and address many of the members concerns about why people are not showing up like they used to. So far we have tackled changing dates of hunts to move them to more desirable temperatures. We voted to move our summer NRD hunt to spring time and cooler temperatures. We discussed possibly working with US Redbone Association to maybe combine on a fall hunt and a committee was formed to work on that. We discussed the possibility of also moving southern days to an early fall date such as October when the weather is a little cooler.
Lots of talk of better weather dates and better locations for certain hunts....and that's a positive that should increase participation, but the sad fact is....we are losing hunters from this sport and our breed and I'm not sure what we can really do about that as an association.
But I will say this to the critics who dont show up to these hunts and then want to gripe when we are forced to cut back.....show up! Make an effort to support this breed and this association.....get involved....show up to the meetings and hear all the details and offer ideas and possible solutions.
These changes did not come easily. There was a lot of discussion not only during this meeting but for months before the meeting. A lot of homework and research was done ...and then presented and the board overwhelmingly voted for change and then so did the membership in attendance.....it wasnt just a few people imposing their will on others as some make it sound.
There are many options available to continue to have a hunt in the south for redbones...but it needs to be well planned, discussed, and an overall success for the club, the association and those who attend it. It may not be what it was...but that doesnt mean it cant be even better than before...
We need to pull together and give all these changes a chance and an honest effort before we write our association off as dead. We made these changes while we are still strong and still have a good financial cushion... that's much better than waiting till we have crossed the line of no return....

Many problems with Southern Days the last few years!

1. Losing money
2. Attendance Way Down
3. Coon Population almost extinct
4. Leadership issues with the power that might be
5. A lack of local people coming
6. Competing with other hunts
7. Other

But it is not it may be brought back again!!!

If the Association took over and put on Southern Redbone Days, then they wouldn't need a club or contract. They would only need to secure a location. With an economic impact of about $10,000, surely some locale would furnish a fairgrounds. Look at how UKC puts on AO and Winter Classic.

It sounds like NRD has been moved to April. I don’t see where anyone has mentioned a location. ???

I am 100% in favor of moving these hunts to cooler weather. Nowadays there are too many obstacles to overcome in the summertime. Every kids I know between the ages of 8-18 have a traveling/summer league game/function (baseball, basketball, soccer, etc) almost every week in the summer. That’s not to mention that everyone is trying to take vacations and such. This is also not to mention how hot and miserable it normally is. I have failed to do my part as a member, but hearing that NRD’s has been moved to April and there is a ‘chance’ that southern days might be reformatted/rescheduled for the fall....that’s makes me feel more inclined to try to attend both hunts. I am pretty fired up about it. I will definitely try to make both hunts . Now if we could just get American days moved to December or January....
