Dog Whispers Needed

Hey y'all I'm Absolutley lost on what to do with my just turned 3 male walker dog. I've had him since he was 8 weeks old, and trained him to totally by himself. He is a coon treeing dog when I hunt, and I hunt a lot. My problem with him is I competition hunt as much as I can, and he is totally lost in a cast. He is very accurate alone but in a cast He is not accurate most of the time. However he is not always bad in a cast, when he has a good night out he is alone and with a coon. When he is bad, is the nights he is with other dogs. I hunted my first comp hunt in 1972 and y'all I'm out of ideas with this dog. I hope y'all have some ideas to share on this. Like I said I love to comp hunt but I have no confidence with this dog at this time. Help needed if you have any clues.

Sounds like he had a bad experience on the tree with another dog or dogs...

Training dogs is not so much about quantity, it's more about timing, and the right situations...After that it's up to the dog....A hunting dog is born...

How often do you hunt him alone through the week? I had one that I hunted alone 95 % of his life and he treed coon nearly every night , but a cast of dogs would blow his mind, I started pleasure hunting him with dogs a little more a night or two a week and he came out of it . He was naturally independent so i couldn’t wrap my head around why dogs had that affect on him but if happened lol . Best of luck !

You need to pleasure hunt him with dogs and different dogs. When he gets to where he is indifferent to any and all he is ready to comp hunt until then you have a really nice pleasure dog.

Woodmerchant 30 has your answer. Just as dogs have to get used to different terrains, they too must get used to treeing with other dogs, keeping their head on straight when other dogs are screwing up etc. You will need to start running him a night or two a week with good solid dogs that will pack and/or split. He will then get used to the extra excitement that goes on around the tree and grow accustomed to keeping his head on straight when other dogs that are close to him are making mistakes.

When hunting a dog strictly by it's self it is then not fully equipped to handle all the commotion of 2-3 more dogs (such as are in a cast) carrying on around him. Just as a dog must get skilled at treeing a coon by it's self, it must also get skilled at keeping its head on straight when others are acting crazy.

Flip flop your training regiment and I think he will adjust to what you expect out of him. If you usually hunt 2 nights per week solo and one night in company, you should now try hunting two nights in company and one night solo. At the end of about 3 months, I think you will see a big change in your hound.

One final thought, make sure those hounds you hunt with are not mean or fussy around the tree.

thanks for asking that question i have the same problem 3 year old male i raised from 8 weeks i hunt 90% of the time alone with just my dogs he hunts good and very accurate but in a comp he acts lost if theres anything that slick trees or runs any fast game so i will try to put him with more and different dogs here at home.

Thanks for the responses so far. I hunt mostly by myself because theyre just aren't many coonhunters in my area anymore. Every chance I get I go with as many different dogs as I can. This dog doesn't mess with any trash he just misses his coons more in the company if dogs. By himself he is accurate and quick to get treed. I go to comp hunts just to get him with other dogs. Thank y'all for the suggestions so far. He has so much ability to be so lost in a hunt.

I also will share alittle more about this dog I'm needing help with. He has been put in 3 UKC Hunts and bas 2 first he placed 3rd. In another KC 2 yr. Old program. I just can't get the consistency I think he should have. I do agree with Redneck Mafia if I can't get this fixed somehow he will just be a very good pleasure dog. However he has shown winning ability, just not consistency.

I've seen it before. I had 1 that would look great alone but in company he couldn't hold it together. I tried for a year hunting him with dogs and without dogs to get him where he should be. And I was never successful at it. He was too competitive, he'd pull up short with dogs. Alone her tree coon and look very good. I sold him to a guy in Arkansas. He hunted him for 2 years and sold him for the same thing.

Some dogs just never get the ability to handle the added pressure of competing hounds.

That is the difference between a dog that can tree a coon and a REAL coon dog.
