Breeding older female ?

Have a female I raised that has never been bred she would be a little over 7 1/2 years old if I bred her during next cycle. I don’t like pups it has been over 35 years since my last litter, but would kind of like one off this female. I just kept telling myself maybe next year. Has anyone had experience with breeding a female under similar circumstances? Or just thoughts or recommendations.

Thanks Jeff.

I bred a ten year old dog that was in good health. Raised 5 nice pups. I wish I had kept more than one of them!

imho, you're at the point where a now or never with her. When a dog gets past 8, they can have a rough time with giving birth. Some have pups easier than others. But seeing she hasn't been bred before, I'd say if she doesn't take on the next cycle I wouldn't try after that. Kind of like a woman having a baby at 45. Yes they can but sometimes have issues.

Now or Never!!!

I went through what you're going through now. I kept telling myself I'll breed Jackie one more time before she gets to old. I kept putting it off and putting it off till it was to late. She passed away in November. She was just so much fun to hunt that I'd say the same thing everytime she came in heat. I'll do it next heat cycle. Boy do I kick myself everyday for not breeding her one more time!!! Only thing I can do now is breed back to her offspring. She was only bred once her whole life and had 3 pups. 2 are owned by David Blake and the other 1 is dead. One of her pups just won the PKC Senior Showdown Championship. His name is PCH Spring Hollow Major Pain. With all that being said.... Don't do like I did and wait till it's to late! Good luck with whatever you decide and if you do decide to raise a litter. I hope she raises you some good ones!

Thanks,

I talked with my local vet about this as Mrs. Hobo was worried about it. My vet said as long as the female was in good health it was fine to breed them. I bred Ruby female at ten years of age and she had 5 pups. She turned 11 a week after having them.

I would breed her...

Jeff one real important thing with an older female. Make sure she is in fairly good shape ( exercised up ) and NOT OVERWEIGHT. If she hasn't been hunted much start taking her out easy at first and hunt her 4-5 hrs a week till up to a few weeks before pups due. From my experience it is very important that an older female like I said be in fair hunting shape and weight is very critical to her not having problems whelping. Good luck.
