Distinguishing one dogs bark from another ?
I know this just comes naturally for some and I envy that. But can you explain how you do it?
Those that are naturals can you give advice?
Those who are not naturals but have learned to do it can you give any advice?
The only way i know to explain it and I’m not trying to be a smart butt but they just sound different. Some may have a coarser, deeper, finer mouth and occasionally you’ll get a couple together that are hard to tell apart
I even did a tone deaf test to see if that was why I have problems but I passed it with flying colors.
Hunt your dog just you and him alone for a few months and his bark will just become natural to you and you will be able to pick him out easily.

Concentrate/focus on just your dog and forget about the others. Focus on listening to your dog and not watching your Garmin. Know every different bark that your dog makes and what they mean. When a dog barks, he is trying to tell you something.
The same way a parent can pick their child out in a playground with 20 other kids running around and screaming.

I definitely wasn't a natural. It was always learned with each hound.
Some are easier than others. Mostly just time spent both alone and hunted with others. Some dogs actually sound fairly different in both of those scenarios even.
In time I had the epiphany that the problem wasn't so much I couldn't tell the difference between dogs as much as it was I could detect even minute difference in the same dog. That lead to greater understanding of what the difference ment.
I remember a hunt in Clinton Missouri where Steve Mackey and I drew out together. Steve's dog treed and the clock was running. My dog was there, but barking in not up. I let the clock run out, much to Steve's ire.
When we got to the tree, Steve's dog was in fact treed. Probably 3 feet away, mine was barking in a hole. Steve's dog had a sow and litter in a dead elm or oak... mine had a single kitten coon in the hole.
That's when you know you understand the dog. Both handlers in this case.

Some people just can't hear as well as others . Just the way it is .
Listening to a dog u learn it ... U learn every bark it makes
The dog is talking to u . So u gotta learn their voice.
It doesnt matter what the others are saying
, learn your dog.
quote:No your dog is the first one that makes a bark

8up...if your phone rings (and you don't look at the caller id) does the caller have to tell you who it is? It's the same principle. Each dog has it's own particular "voice". It should come second nature after awhile. You just need to spend enough time with the dog to recognize it's voice and the various ways he/she applies it.
Thank you everyone. Part of the problem is I hunt dads pups plus 1 of mine and a nephew brings his sometimes so I always have at least 2 out there and rotating 3 is tough for and old fat guy. Sometimes it takes all my attention just to stay on my feet. lol
The best guy I ever hunted with that knew your dog better than you after 1 track n tree. Is John Monroe. I don't have the knack either.
Time, time, and more time. Im just like you . Envy guys who can hunt a dog one night and they feel comfortable going to a hunt.
