Has anyone broke a dog off squirrels?

Got a 3 year old Male dog that I think has turned over to squirrels. He drives a track hard and trees good when coon are moving but on frosty nights like last night he just runs through the woods till he hits the first tree that SOMETHING when up and trees. I know hes not right by the sound of him treeing. I will stand back and watch him and he goes from tree to tree. He will locate and chop each time. Getting a little frustrated and not real sure what to do about it. I feel like my dog has gone backwards. Has anyone had this issue with a dog before?

I started getting after him with the shock collar. I would lead him up and shock him and lead him off the tree 40 yard and send him another direction. Then comes up the same way. The only time he quits is if I lead him to the truck and go to the next woods then he may run a coon and tree. As a pup when he started treeing he treed a lot of dens. I wonder if those may have been squirrels.

Take him in the day time and see what he is doing. If he is treeing squirrels. Give up his coon treeing, a good squirrel dog is more valuable than a poor coon hound.

I've broke half a dozen or so for guys right in my backyard. Squirrel feeders and shock collar works wonders if used right.

one of the best dogs i ever had would tree flying squirrels at night,i knew they was flying squirrels because i would see them.what i did was i had already bonded with the dog so he thought i walked on water so when he treed a flying squirrel i would talk rough with him and let him know i wasnt happy with him and i would lead him away from the tree a few yards and told him to get in there.i did this maybe 5 or 6 times and after that he never treed another squirrel that i know of. he wasnt hard headed and he wanted to please me so he wasnt that hard to break,but i know all dogs are different.

I have one that as a pup would tree squirrels, field mice, possums, you name it. He was split treeing by hisself at 7 months old though. Anyway I still suspect him of a squirrel every now and then but when I walk into a tree and do not see a coon he gets a quick bump from the tritronics and sent on his way, the ones that do this kinda stuff seem to have more drive to get treed and on a bad night this time of year they are going to tree something, I think it may help to pick and choose what nights you hunt the dog also and try to hunt him on the better nights when you think game may be moving too.

He looks like a million bucks if I hunt him in ideal conditions! Once I put pressure on him or hunt him on a harder night he crumbles. I figured on hunting him till spring and if he cant get it together I'm afraid he may have to move on.

It can be very difficult to break some off squirrel. E collar on the lowest setting it takes to move him off the trees may work the best or a switch. I have no idea why your leashing him up to move him from the trees I don't think that will be the right thing to do but I may be wrong. I think more dogs tree squirrel than people realize. I never understood when some one is happy when there pup starts out treeing them. Possums would be more impressive. Anyways sounds like you already have your work cut out for yourself.

I have found that it is best to break them from squirrels by breaking them before they tree one. Same as possumes or porkeys or other things that climb. There is a way to do it. Break them from the scent. I have done it. Same as deer. Break them from deer before they actually run a deer. Its all in the set up on how it works. I will go ahead and tell you now that Wild Willy helped me on this and it works.

I did that with deer, I would purposely drop him on a deer that crossed the road shock him off it then he would go in the woods run a track and tree. Should I take him out right before dark tonight and once hes running squirrels correct him and put him in a heavy coon area to see if he runs a coon or not. Or do I just continue to walk to empty trees and shock him off them and make him move on? I considered shooting a squirrel and doing a drag and see if he runs it then I know for sure that's what hes doing.

No this method is more than leaving it up to chance. I sent Willy a text and maybe he will get on here and be able to help. The set up is to break the dog from the scent before they tree or run the unwanted game.

Set out a squirrel feeder in your yard, when u see them feeding, head on out and get ol Roy, you will have scared squirrel off, let ol Roy go and when he runs that track, buzz him good. May have to do it once, maybe a dozen times, if he got q brain he will figure it out quick. Just dont assume and shock, make sure and get him good, not a little tickle. I've broke several this way.

I always put the treeing squirrel theory right up there with the treeing bobcats and they are jumping out theory. It just sounds better than admitting they are slick treeing and leaving trees.

I was the same way...until this year. I have an almost 3-year-old female that last winter was the most accurate do I ever hunted. Late summer, early fall this year she started missing. About 3 weeks ago I heard her fussing with the 7-month-old pup she's kenneled with. They're in a 20X80 foot yard. The older female had caught a squirrel and the pup wanted it. I took it from her and didn't think much of it. A week later I heard barking and went to have a look. They were both treed on the only tree in their yard. So, if she will tree a squirrel in the yard why wouldn't she tree one in the woods? Also she always had a real good locate and treed hard. Now she will start barking treed and not tree hard but not leave. These are the trees that don't have coons.

I took him out tonight and couldn't ask for better hunting conditions. My males performance was terrible. I shocked him off two slicks, treed a den. Treed a coon then pulled off the tree as I was walking in. After leaving the coon he went deeper and treed a slick. Shocked him off that and treed a den. I did notice tonight he just didn't have the normal energy as always. He also looks like hes dropping weight. He may have a Vet visit coming up shortly. He just isn't the same dog.

Squirrel have a curfew. I don't think so. Flying squirrel move all night and hounds trail by scent not sight any way.
