Not sure how much of an issue it is for coon hounds unless you run in deep snow under crusty conditions which would be pretty unlikely. Now if you got hare hounds running in those conditions, now that's a different story.

Most guys raising a litter of beagles (in snowshoe hare country) will clip dew claws off within the first 3 days of the pups life.

P.S. If dew claws are not removed within the first few days of life removal becomes expensive. Once the claws attach to the leg bone it becomes a surgical procedure performed by a vet.

.

DJ NH pretty much summed it up. They are something that some line of dogs have. I am sure some can trace to back and have ideas on where it genetically comes from. I have my thoughts and I am sure others have theirs. As far as being a good or bad thing. I don't think it is either. I also don't think because of all the mixture of genetics we have today that you can link its dew claws with other characteristics in most cases. Real simple to get rid of in the first day or two just like DL said. Bottom line is they are just something the dog doesn't need that can be injured while running and put to dog out of action for a while.

I see them every now and then even in our line. No need for a vet visit even in older pups even dogs. Get the tiny silicone bands used on little girls hair, the size fits the end of my pinky finger. Wrap the band as tight as you can get it around the base of the dew claw and it will fall off in no time. After it has failen off spray it with Blue Kote. Saves a trip to the vet and if you don't have the stuff on hand will cost you around $10.
