white river refuge arkansas
Some of my buddies and i are thinking about taking a hunting trip this fall to arkansas for a week to do a little coon hunting. I was wondering if anyone had any info on cabins or anything in the area where a man could stay. thanks in advance for any info

Maddox Bay Cabins in Holly Grove is where we stay
You all should take the trip. Greatest place on earth for a tree dog enthusiast to enjoy. God made that place for us

Any specific dates or just the first of each month?
Are both units equally as good?
Thanks
The north unit is 11/18 to 1/31 the south unit is 12/1 to 12/15 the south is better hunting.

Ive been wanting to make this trip for years as well. Just hesitant to pull the trigger and drive that far. Ive always heard dogs will be everywhere, how difficult is it to find a place to turn loose? Can you use an ATV and is there trails to drive on? This year may be the year I head out!
You will hear other dogs and usually have dogs come in to u. Atvs are allowed with a lot of trails and are really useful. Thousands of acres have been cut over the last few years and the hunting isnt as good as it was but is still better than most places. Monday-Thursday will have way less traffic.

O yea take
Been there dun that, hope you take one of them get deep and lonely dogs with you that way you can enjoy the vastness of the refuge cause you gona walk your hiney off, I was disappointed in the coon population. The best part was the stay at maddox lodge ,new and clean, Danny is first class and will go out of his way to make your stay pleasant have his # if u need it .

Coon population varies greatly depending on flooding and location. The refuge was under water 2 years in a row during late spring hurting the kitten population and has not rebounded yet..

BEST PLACE EVER IN MY OPINION
I have been 5 years in a row. Have had dogs come into me 3 times and the guys that came and got them where all fine fellows.
Last year in 6 nights we treed 111 and knocked out 88
Year before that 57 in 5 nights
Year before that I don’t remember
First year it sucked because of dog power.
If you take a dog or pack of dogs down there that has coon treeing on their mind it will blow yours.
We hunt the same spots turn in behind guys after they pull out or invite guys to turn loose if they pull up and we are in there.
You can ride your atv way back in the wilderness and get alone or you can stay on the road.
I love it pray to God I have 40 more years of going down there. Wish I had started 20 years ago
The gentleman at the cabins wanted us to bring our coon in for pictures. Once we reached the 88 mark piled up where he told us we did get a visit from the Arkansas Fish and Wildlife dept. they said guys get them all because we want you too but you got to stop piling so many up because we have had at least 10 calls about these. Lol
One local guy came over and gave us a hard time. After about 20 minutes of telling us how bad of people we are a guy with us said hey buddy what kind of dogs do you hunt. He said redbones. My buddy said well they must be pretty d**n worthless if you leaving this many for us. It was hilarious.
Final say is go. You may not be here next year. Don’t put it off!!!!

mr.carter speaking of redbones how are the flush pups doing and how does killing that many coon affect your dogs
How is the squirrel hunting?

Out of the first Flush cross two tree coons and two were disposed of. The two kept need a win each to be ntch
The second cross are around a year old and that cross on Jim worked better than John Henry. A little more time will tell.
How did that many coon affect the dogs? Didn’t see a difference in them as they are used to it. I am a self professed raccoon removal operation.
The young dogs we took seem to really click when we get them back home.
