Dog houses

Im gonna start building a dog house for my future dog and was wondering if i should insulate, it will be made out of wood and im in iowa so sometimes winters are mild but sometimes we have very cold stretctchs such as windchills in the negative 20s, summer temps are usually from 85 abd occasionally close to 100. I know insulating will obviously make it warmer in the winter but id assume the dog probably wont be in the actual house much during the summer but probably loafing on top or in the shade. So with these conditions would it be best to insulate? Im jusr not sure as i realize a dog already has a warm fur coat and ive never had a dog let alone kept one outside year round

There are some good houses to be bought. Search on here and see what’s available. You probably won’t save much money by building one yourself.

Well the reason im building it is i have access to free lumber so all i have to buy is the screws, paint, and potentially insulation and i like building stuff, so i should be cheaper than just buying one

I would insulate, cooler in summer also.
Do you have plans for the house?

I do not have any plans, i looked online for plans but all i found was designs for fancy looking doghouses that didnt look like would suit me well, so i was just thinking like 3.5 feet square by 2.5 feet tall with a flat roof so it can lay on top

I just built some

I just built two for my hounds. All sides but the top is insulated. My supplies were all from Home Depot, cost me around $150 to make (1) 32"x32"x32" box.

The exterior is made out of that T1-11 exterior 4'x8' sheating. Interior walls are 7/16" particle board sheating, with 1.5" of insulation board between the two walls. Silicone putty to seal the exterior edges covered by aluminum corner pieces screwed in.cut off pieces of aluminum allowed me to cover all four sides of the dog hole. I think these turned out really well and should last a long time. Since the top is flat, I went a little extra with the sealant putty on the top underneith the aluminum corner edge trim.

Text me 585-993-0135, and I will share start to finish pictures.
