Why a walker hound???
Why did you guys choose the walker breed as your breed of choice ?? Think this could be a interesting post ....
Please if your breed of choice is not walker no need to reply with a hateful post !!!
This is not intended to prove everyone's opinion of what is the best breed .......im asking the walker guys why you chose to hunt walkers ....

I think a lot has to do with the numbers. You have a better chance in getting a quality hound. On the average I’d say most start earlier than some of the other breeds.
For me it has to do with speed. I've seen more walkers avg above 7 mph than any other breed. I like one that hunts fast and tracks faster. I actually prefer one to avg around 10 mph or faster. But those ones are extremely rare. I started out with redbones. Then I tried blueticks, and I've had walked for the past 6 years. Which in this business isn't much time at all.

I picked Walkers so I could talk about them on this main board and not have to go to the breed-specific section like all the other breeds.

I have walkers b/c of the folks that got me into hunting with hounds.
They had walkers. I can still remember the first time I went. My Uncles' old walker threw out that dying locate and settled into the non stop chop and I knew I had to have one. I've been feeding them ever since then.

Because the other breeds didn't suit me. Why does anyone pick anything?

I hunt walkers cuz their the dog ta beat in 90% of the hunts I enter.
I prefer English .
So I got both.
If my English can't keep up with my walker dogs, time ta get some new English genetics.
So far my English are holding their respect.
So with that being said I prefer to beat the Walker dogs
with my English dogs.,😁
Speed, tracking, treeing, looks, discipline. The list could go on for me.

I didnt specifically choose walkers but i chose certain specific bloodlines of walkers. HUGE HUGE differences in different bloodlines of walkers.

I started with off color dogs and keep one today, BUT, I decided if I was going to win hunts or tree Coons in style I had to switch.
I am a black dog man at heart but I just couldn’t compete on level I wanted.

Jason, what line are you hunting and why?
I wish I could find a walker that suited me as well as my older English female. If your hard to please one in 5000 walkers will please you. I've got a walker now fairly nice dog. Far from special. I hunted walkers for 15 years. Never had one with any consistency. Just my exsperance.
.
I think it was from being brainwashed.
The top 25 money winning walkers have won right at 2.5 million dollars.
Maybe it was all the publicity they got for winning, brainwashed a lot of us. LOL
I can tell you brainwashing is a terrible thing.
The Walker Dog pretty much ruined the American Cooner Magazine. Guys who hunted other breeds of dogs stopped taking it, because it had nothing but walkers in it. It wasn't the magazines fault that the walkers won and got all their pictures and stories about them in print.

I had curs, redbones, blueticks, treeing Tennessee Brindle, and plotts. Plotts were my favorite.
The dog that taught me about coon hunting was a treeing walker puppy. He was treeing ahead of old dogs at 8 months old. He never ran fast game, and would tell on dogs that did. He would come and sit down next to me until I told him go find a coon. He wouldn't run and tree possums, but if he ran across it it was dead. That was his major flaw. He was one of the smartest dogs I have ever seen in my life time. I got him in 1983 when he was 9 weeks old. He got hit by a car and killed in 1986.
I not only hunt walkers, I still hunt his descendants, and will as long as I can hunt.

He was out of a dog named Hickory Hill Jack (HHJ). His mother was bred pretty tight on the original Hickory Nut Harry. His pups either were naturally straight or easily broke.
Looking back it is unreal just how much this one dog and his offspring has affected my life through the last 35 years. I wouldn't change one thing.
