-- When is a Dog , Not A Pup? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928501156)

Posted by DocAcumen on 03-05-2018 12:32 AM:

When is a Dog , Not A Pup?

I only ask this , as I am sure I just read?
Maybe I was wrong?

That there was a PUP Shoot OUT?
And some were 4 Years old?

Sure I am WAY WRONG! But , can not see a 4 year old as a PUP?

I understand that some hunting dogs live longer tan others , no different than humans!

So what is the average life of a hound? One hunted and all or course.

I will guess 10 is a good age, while some may get up to 12-15?

So , 4 would seem perrty close to Middle Aged I would think?
Not a PUP ?

Yes, in PKC. Same as the super stakes. The last year of their super stakes they still qualify for the pup shoot out. I agree with what your saying about a 4 yr old not being a pup. It should be labeled as young dog shoot out.

I quit calling mine pups after their second birthday. But that's just me. I don't think their is any official designation.

JiM ,
I think you are on to something!

I cant see them hunting as a PUP past 2.5

That would make them , according to , what folks claim ?
to be 17.5 years old in human years!

So, still a High School! kid and all!!!

At 4, they should have been to College, the Military , or moved on to working , ECT!

Not , by ANY means !!!! Still hanging out at the HIGH SCHOOL!!!

Unless they had Kids going there!!!! LMFAO!

You are arguing about semantics. Pup shootout is just a "name". They have a Senior Shootout for dogs over 4 and a Pup Shootout for dogs under 4. Is a 4 yr old a "Senior"?

Because "Super Stakes Eligible Dogs Truck Shootout" just doesnt roll off of the tongue the same way I suppose.

Nobody thinks a 4 year old is a pup

Many years ago it was believed that a dogs age was each year x 7 to equal how old they would be in human years...I thought that was a bunch of bull and it was...at 3 years old the dog is coming into his prime and at 4 years they are in their prime...

We can call them pups at 2.5 years old but they are young dogs...
I think a one year old is a young dog as well as a 1.5 year old...some dogs mature at a younger age...especially the smaller type dogs...

If mine are 13 months old they better be a nice young hound or they will be finding new housing arrangements.

.

I think understanding of the programs plus the rules used explains the situation.

In UKC there is the Performance Program and offspring of Performance Sire collects points his entire life at any age.

In $KC they have a Program that takes the pups from Sires and puts them in the SS program and rewards them. They just reward them differently and it stops at a certain age.
There are actually three divisions in the SS Program. Sophomore, Junior and Senior. Because in each bracket there could be a year difference in age they broke it down to a Spring and Fall which allows the dogs to be separated by only 6 moths. Now as Josh said it rolls off the tongue easier to call these dogs pups.

Now the $kc also has two hunts each year that they award the winner a Truck. They broke that down into two different classifications also. One for the dogs still in the SS program and one for the older dogs that have because of age left the SS Program. So a dog for purposes of this hunt can be called a Pup on day and the next day because of age be called a Senior Dog. It is just terminology to match the dog up with each group of dogs it is competition with. For the two Truck Hunts each year there are 64 dogs selected for each hunt depending on money won each month and which type of hunt it was won in. Those are know as the Pup Truck Hunt and Senior Truck Hunt.

They other side of the coin is when these pups in this program are started out in competition to win money so they can make it to these truck hunts. They are competing with all dogs at the hunt. Yes these year old dogs are beating Night Champions, Grand Night Champions, Gold and Silver Champions when the compete in an open event. Now at some events there are cast called pup cast that is just for SS pups but my personal opinion has always been to hunt in the regular cast as there are generally more dogs and more money to be won that night.

For coonhunters at the coffee shop and if I was there with you. The terminology I would use is if my dog is over a year old is it is a dog. Pup, Young or Dog is just words use to generally excuse poor performance by the owner. He is just a pup, Or he is young. It in most cases it is not about the age but about the miles and experience.

Oh my goodness, that Mr Conley sure has a way with words. Let's see y'all argue with that? They are only pups when they act stupid.

I got a 120 month old puppy then sometimes.

Thanks Bruce, I wasn't going to type that all out.

Posted by Richard Lambert on 03-05-2018 01:21 PM:

Tarbaby, I have a 6 yr old that thinks she is a pup. I have to keep reminding her that she isn't. On the other hand, I have a 1 yr old that I have to keep reminding myself that she is just a pup. She has been treeing coons since she was 6 mos old. A 2 yr old is still a pup to me. We never call a dog a "teenager". They are either pups or grown dogs. I guess we need a word for 11/2 to 2 1/2 yr olds.

Posted by yadkintar on 03-05-2018 01:38 PM:

Well what would you call this I bought a 3 yr old out of granny he had been out of the pen 30 times 15 of that was cage coons all he knew was to tree and I mean tree lol. I have been hunting him hard and I am making good progress ( I was beginning to wonder ) I had a buddy just hunted bluticks in Texas James petty we always had a big time hunting a man gave him a 8 yr old female that had never been hunted just raised pups in 60 days she was treeing coons on everything we had that was one of the ding ding !! Moments in my life I have made a lot of extra cash taking 2 or 3 yr old dogs that never got hunted and making dogs out of them if they got it they got it jmo.

And a lot of times you get them for puppy prices papers paid up.

After 12 months old! His or her age is the same, whether you call it a pup, or a young dog.

Dennis, if you could, please define what you consider a “nice young hound”

Good question, I'd like to see a response to that one as well.
