Help getting hound to hunt.
I have a year old that will go but not far enough. Alone she goes around 100-150. She’s been doing it alone for a month. Some nights she goes, some nights she don’t. Now with another dog, she has no problem going. Any advice is much appreciated guys. Thanks in advance.
I'm no expert, but I've had similar troubles she would do a 100 yards or so circle now she will blow out a mile if need be. All I did was keep turning her out, if you can drive to the turn out turn her a loose and get in the truck and ignore her at all cost sooner or later they start venturing out. eventually she will get bored as will you.
She is just a year old confidence level is not there yet wait about 5 more months then evaluate her.
Tar
Same keep hauling her and turning her loose. She will come around. Maybe lay her up for a week. She will be eager to go harder. At least it has worked for me
The one thing you don't want to do is hunt her with another dog she will be harder to get over it. Answer: Take her with another dog, it will take 8 to 10 times to get her over it, take her 4 or 5 times with another dog it will take 40 to 50 time out to get her over it. Quick Solution hunt the dog were she will hit a coon she will forget about the other dog a lot faster and figure out what she is hunting for.!!!!! Fasteddy!!

That's not true, your talking about hunting on a feeder, Here again you don't know what I'm talking about!!HEHEHEHE LOL!!
This has work for me: lead the dog to your best spots for a few nights, if the dog has any desire to hunt said dog will be pulling you to the timber line. And you should be able to cut said dog at a farther distance each time. Before long they will be poking a little tiny hole unto the dark
Nope I don't hunt around a feeder. Never have. Seen way more than 1 dog that wouldn't hunt out past 150 yards. And they all expected you to walk hunt them. If you continuously keep putting the dog where it will find a track within its hunting range/comfort zone you'll be reinforcing that behavior. There is other ways to do it but I don't recommend them. They cause other issues that snowball quickly.
OP, You want the dog to hunt out, do as previously mentioned before Eddy posted. Take the dog to a drop spot that you can park close to. Cut loose, get back in truck. And I'm not totally disagreeing with what he said just the last part. If you hunt the dog with another dog it reinforces that behavior and will take a long time to correct.

I know Hardwood Swamp is a Legend in the Walker Breed. I am sure several of you read what was published in the American Cooner by the owner many years ago on how Swamps issues with not wanting to hunt out was solved. That method gets my vote!
I would say since we live in a kinder more gentle world today when dealing with all our problems. I would try "the by herself method" mentioned here first.
Seems like the kinder I get, the more problems I have. I think we are seeing that in the world also.

Agreed Bruce. Seems like the kinder you are to people and hounds the more problems you end up with.

THAT"S RIGHT!!! Sleepy Head!
I miss that story. What was the method used on Swamp? Did Medley have him then?

Ive had luck sending them across a small open field with a switch to the backside and increase the distance as the dog progresses. They learn real quick to get that backside gone fast and rarely have I had one that wouldn't face me when I cut it loose. I'm not their buddy until the job is done and then I love them to death.

I surly am not the only guy that reads the magazines. I will let someone else that read the story give their understanding of it.
