Why don't you see more Plotts?
Always liked the story behind plott hounds. Why aren't they more popular? Do they not fair as well in our current competition format? I don't think I've ever been in the woods with one
I think the reason you dont see them much in competition is because they are bred to be pack hunters.

Plotts
John's Buckeye Bud dog won the PKC World hunt a few years back and I Remember when Kansas Sizzlin Heat won the UKC World Hunt. I forgot to mention the Hatchet Mountain Plotts from a few years back. I had a nice one out of Doc & Spider they were both Grand Nite dogs.

If you see Bill Herrell at a hunt go look at the dog he's hunting, then you be able to say you've seen a good one. He was 16 seconds from making the final 4 at the world hunt 4 or 5 years ago with Mis t
There's a few Plotts on this side of PA. Paul Smithers has a male he competes with at bench shows and hunts.
Plotts do how you train them if you hunt them by there self all the time they don't pack much if you hunt them with dogs all of a time they pack . I own a a good one ,when he was young I would put him up against anything in the country and you can ask around about that . if I didn't have three kids and coach some of there sports they played who knows what we could have one but I would not trade what I did for all the money in the world . I own GRNT CH Carr's Redwood Skid
A good one
Do yawl remember the Plot Female by the named of Annie huh she won quite a bit, the Purina race and the World Show just to name a few.

We do okay with them in competition hunts. A couple of ours had cast wins in pkc ukc and chkc this last year. They win some nights and lose some nights just like all the other breeds. Brent Zink's dogs have always done well in competition. I think zbar was final 4 or won SS in like 09. Which is what most of our stuff goes back to. We don't breed them to pack. And we try to keep ours in coon hunters hands. We get alot of calls to use them for bear dogs and hog dogs. Most of the guys who hunt hogs and bears do not care if they pack.

There was a guy at a UKC hunt in Bryant Indiana that I went too. Don't know his name offhand but he had a plott dog that wasn't quite 2 years old. I got to talking to him and he said he was hoping to finish him that night. I said to Nite champion? He said no, that little plott dog had 4 wins towards grand and wasn't 2 years old. I believe he finished that dog that night too.

I've wondered about that also, my thoughts are it's a couple things, first a numbers game, outnumbered at least 50 to 1 which shouldn't matter If you have a good one. Second, the ones I've owned,, you'll see the coon 90 percent plus when they tree, unless it's a den, they're not fast enough, they haven't figured out how to beat the coon to the tree. Lol
I hunted plotts for 20 years and the reason you don't see more of them at the hunts is because the don't reproduce (from my experience) a high percentage of good dogs. When you do have a good one, they're tough to beat!

I see lots of Plotts out pleasure hunting. But you don't see many Plott owners that are competition hunters/handlers. I think the reason that you don't see more of them in comp hunts has more to do with the owners than the dogs.
There is a man from mendon Ohio Doug not sure of his last name he has a granite named cash not sure of the breeding but I hunted with the dog several nights almost always by his self and has the meat I definitely would feed him
I occasionally bump into a guy hunting plots while pleasure hunting .his dogs always seem more than capable of winning hunts .i know he has placed high in a world hunt or two ,but I don’t think he has competition hunted for a while .last time I seen him he said he just had a pup and I think that was his 4th or 5th generation of his own dogs.

I owned one from the famous Butch and Jill cross many moons ago. If memory serves me correctly Everett Weems was responsible for that line of plots and I believe were mostly bred for bear. If Fielder reads this maybe he will set me straight. I hunted with a couple good ones from the cross but mine did not play well with others and was put down.

I have a good Plott female and some Cur - Plott crosses but I'm not a competition hunter.
