-- My first real thyroid problem (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928499757)
My first real thyroid problem
I have read and heard of this problem but never experienced it first hand until now which was mighty untimely. We had our dog pre entered for the Winter Classic and about two weeks ago the dog just started doing things way out of character of himself. He was acting scared at times for no reason, stand on his head where he normally could drve a track, missed more trees etc. We took him to the vet and his thyroid levels were less than half of normal levels. So guys the reason i am posting this is to help others be aware. Before you go to shocking or correcting your dog in other ways if they are screwing up in ways that are out of the norm for that dog, by all means have them tested. You may find as i did that its actually no fault of your dog but a medical issue. Thyroid problems will affect your dog in ways i never imagined and i been at it for many years. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Just living a experience
My hunting buddy of over 20 years bought a dog got him home and we started hunting him and man can he run a track, go hunting with or without company, locate with the best of um with a booming mouth, tree a few and then leave barking. My buddy talked to another coon hunter who stated he had a dog by the same stud doing the same thing took him to the vet and lo and behold thyroid was real low put him on medicine and now he is a stay put tree dog. SO my buddy did the same thing, go to vet low thyroid put on medicine NOW that sucker does the same thing as before only difference is a big vet and medicine bill and my buddy WONT admit it has NOT HELPED.
Hope you have a better outcome.
Do not have any advice either way only LIVING A EXPERIENCE

Mr. James did you have your dog tested for tick issues? I have found several times they were the root cause and that needed to be address first.

I aint convinced by any means its bloodlines related issues. I read an article a long while back where studies had been done and the problem is in our dog feeds now days. The feeds used to contain iodized salt now due to government regulations most no longer do. Dogs bodies just like humans must maintain a certain level so i think we will only see this problem increase over time. I appreciate any input on the subject. Maybe we can all learn from one another even though each dogs levels will be different they should trend somewhatclose i would think.

I have found, in feed that has no corn and/or grain(natural iodine) they are supplimenting with chemicals, such as potassium iodide. I went back to basics, a food with corn. But it is the second ingredient. 3 of 5 ingredients are meat based. Their thyroid levels have came up. Search my name and check my post out.

I have one had elichria and low thyroid, was a pretty nice young dog and hasnt came back to where he was, cant take the cold, will get red on underside if thyroid gets low. Looks good tonight, may or may not next night. I talked to a guy that adds salt to his dog food, anybody else try that? I always leaned towards it being genetics but not so sure anymore. Is it something thats been there all along and we are just starting to catch it or is it something new? I would be curious to know how much it shows up in beagles, bird dogs, and fox/deer dogs.

Guys have U researched the iodide issue
I doubt if the dog feed companies are using the common name for this product after searching the I/N there are several LONNNNNG names that can be associated with and a lot of different sources this product can be used with to get the sane results SALT old common IODISE table salt can put enough in your system I think if I understood what I read. so what I am saying is this I doubt if the D/F companies are going to list potasium Iodide just some other product that get the same results.
I would only hope they understand the importance if this, ORE we are making a bigger issue than it really is. Now don't holler at me just thinking out loud.
What I do know is this if my dog is lacking which I will never know cause he is what he is and that is just fine cant afford a big vet bill and med bill now been hunting that sorry pot licker for 7 years an it is what he is SORRY but that is ok by me. May ad a little salt now and then just to see.
And another thing sleepy head may really be on to something

Sleepy head that is "Thinking out of the Box" The answer is right here in front of everyone, we just don't have an answer yet and this post has actually made more sense pointing to a couple possible problems than several others, I saw. I checked several dog food company ingredients and didn't see the one harleydan mentioned in any. Could be like HL said and they mask it.
I think it is a combination of things. Starting with the knowledge vets have about the effect of the Thyroid on a Coon Hounds performance. Right up to what ingredient or lack of is causing this. Then also seperating what may be a genetic problem form and man made problem. Out of all the different things with our hounds and conditions they can get. This is one I would like to live long enough to see some actual proof on where this problem comes from.
The other side of the coin it there are millions to be made is someone comes up with the answer and develops something to help keep the thyroid stable in our hounds.
If there was a dog food put on the market today that could guarantee good thyroid health the would be lined up to buy it.

I feed Sportmix, high energy mini chunks. Of the First 5 ingredients, 3 are meat based. Corn is second. I didn't care for the 27/12 Sportmix, but the 26/18 makes my dogs much better.

Yep I may need to switch to a better dog feed I feed the best VICTOR makes, what would you recommend I switch to cause my coon dog deserves the best. And by the way there can't be many more expensive dog feed on the market so don't let the price influence your choice.
