Strange sounds in the night.

Last night, Shadinc and myself where making our way to my hound. We stopped to listen a minute, and I heard something that sounded like a bamboo cane popping in the distance. I heard it again, and told Donald to be still and listen. It sounded like, imagine putting your finger over an air hose, and removing it to release a short burst of air, or maybe opening a coke can under pressure. This sound started out to our right and move off to the left, about every 40 yards, till it was almost out of hearing. What in the world is that, I asked. Donald said that’s a bird. Well I aint never heard a bird that sounded like that. A few minutes later a possum came waddling by, and went on past us. The sound started getting closer again, circling around in front of us. Then all of a sudden, the possum shows up again, make that strange sound. Then off it went making that sound about every 40 yards or so. We had a few laughs, and just figured it was sick. A few seconds later, another possum came through trailing the one making this noise.
Has anyone ever witnessed this before?

Strange sounds in the night

I've heard a lot of sounds at night Mr. Tommy, but I've never heard anything like that and I've never heard a possum do anything, but maybe growl.

I've been hunting for 60 years and I never heard that before. We assumed it was the mating call since the second possum was trailing the one making the noise.
