The hunting bug bit me the first day I got a bb gun. I quickly graduated to a Crosman pellet gun.

When I was in 4th grade I got on the AB Honor Roll and stayed there the whole year. My dad traded an old 1941 Ford pickup for a single shot Stevens 20 gauge, and gave it to me for doing well in school. My mother asked him if I was old enough to hunt with a real gun. I remember his response like it was yesterday. He replied, "he already brings home more game with a pellet gun than any man I know."

My dad and I went hunting about 3-4 times for squirrels and rabbits. I was allowed to hunt by myself from that point on. In addition to hunting I started trapping at 7. My goal in life was to become a mountain man. Hunting with dogs was a given since I loved dogs.

I didn't get introduced to coon hunting until I was 13. It has all been down hill since then. That was in 1973.

Lets see around 1967 or 8 i was reading a outdoorlife mag article at the school library about these guys coonhunting in the cornfields of Minnesota of all places. I asked my dad about that.. He fixed me up with some men where he worked. Been hooked ever since. Like larry said been all down hill from there. Lol

Hooked

I started when I was about 12 years old my old crossed bread dog treed a coon while squirrel hunting and I was hooked from that time about 50 years ago.

Coonhunting....

My Late Great Uncle Lester Rogers took me Coonhunting for the first time with a pair of B&T's...It was down at Patsey Ky on my Grandmothers Farm and I was 13 years old. Boy was I hooked. I would tag along with him & my Dad and at age 17 my Dad gave me my First very own Walker Male, and he was Registered.....He was a Heavy House Bred Dog and made a Dandy.
I put that Pup in the Woods Day & Night.....he was running and treeing his own at 8 months old. My Dad traded me a 1971 Ford Torino for him, only for me to find out that Dad was going to give me the Car anyways.....LOL..( He really wanted this Pup ( Dan ).
This will be my 40th year Coonhunting.......made a lot of Good Memories and a few not so good......
Tim

I am with Bruce, genetics both sides. My Dad was born in south east Ky. they hunted for food and made whiskey to sell. My Mom's brothers were also poor folk hunted for the table, coons to sell the hides and carcuses to those that ate them .

When I was 12 the older neighbor girl started dating this guy who coon hunted. He took me n the other neighbor kid hunting n I was absolutely hooked. His name was terry gerber n to this day we r still good friends. Over 20 years ago . He’s the one that gave me my first pup n taught me more about dogs n coonhunting than any body I know. He had back in the 90’s one of the best English dogs I’ve ever been to the woods n did quite a bit of winning with her I believe. Grntch. Red river sassy is probably still one of the reasons I still hunt English dogs today.

as a policeman in around 1988 I was driving the back country roads when I saw flashlights on the side of the road. It was summer time and coon season was not in. I stopped and dogs were treeing on the side of the road and the guys explained to me they were coon hunting. I asked if I could take my .38 revolver and shoot the coon and they laughed said go ahead. I shot that coon out and that's how I got started. Ended up being great friends with the same coon hunters.

True story but this is not Yard Dog Joker this is a retired policeman.

Tent Camping

Tent camping during the summer of my 8th grade year. Heard a hound trailing off in the distance, probably half a mile away. My school buddy camping with me explained what the hound was doing. He had gone coonhunting with his Grandpa. Listened to that hound for what seemed like half the night. I was hooked.
Eventually a few years later I got a grade pup and tried to train it. Later hooked up with some real coonhunters, that had real coondogs. Got to doing things right. Been at it for 30 years or so now.

Cheyenne was still in diapers and had a bottle between his teeth and snuck out the back screen door to follow his daddy who was hunting behind their house. That was 45 yrs ago and he has never stopped. His dad and uncles took him with them from then on until he was old enough to go on his own. Back then it was campfires, carbides always hunting the hills south of here. His great uncles hunted their own line of redbones his dad hunted whatever he had traded for at the time. He got into Walkers to be different from his brothers who hunted English dogs and the Mailes brothers he hunted with had Blueticks. As a kid and younger man he never carried a gun, any tree that the coon came out of was knocked out by a rock (& no I'm not kidding, if he could throw a baseball like he can throw a rock we'd be rich!) or by climbing and knocking it out to the dogs alive, he climbed trees till into his 30's and after falling out of one decided it was time to pack the gun lol. I remember doctoring lots of ears back then and our dogs with age their ears didn't hang down they kinda stuck out on the sides of their heads He was well known for using a 2 cell flashlight to shine if he didn't have an actual hunting light which was often. Those that know him well know he still very seldom uses a light for walking.
Myself, I had no idea what I was getting into 25 yrs ago. My family bird hunted I knew Chey coon hunted, little did I know it was an obsession not a hobby lol. If you can't beat em' join em'.

My Dad

grew up during the depression and they hunted to put food on the table. They also fox hunted because there were not that many coons back then except way back in the mountains. Then as a kid my Dad had mostly Bluetick's and was good friends with Bill Ferebee, Wayne Baker and Kelly Bragg. We just loved hunting anything with hounds. love to see/hear a good dog work a track!

Dad gave me my 1st coonhound the day I was born. In 41 years I have never been without one that could tree it's own coon. Some were better then others. Lol but never been without one.
Dad don't get far from the truck anymore but he has his own Garmin and watches that thing like a dang video game. It's nice to have him at the truck when I need to get picked up at the other end of the section 😀

My husband worked midnight to AM. I was going to get a Doberman for a watch dog. Before I got one, he gave me a Redbone/Walker for Christmas 1976. She was only going to be a pet, but turned out to be an awesome coonhound. She died when she was 10 and a pup we got out of her died a couple of yrs later. We moved, had job changes and were done coon hunting until our son decided since his dad was getting ready to retire that he needed a Redbone, so 5 yrs ago he gave us Ruby.

Posted by Autumn Clements on 01-11-2018 01:55 PM:

Was born into it lol

My father had beagles for hunting rabbits and was just getting into coonhunting around the time I was born, by the time I could walk I started coonhunting with him.
