Coon population in ohio

What is the coon population where you are at? Seems like something hit ours, not what it should be.

Where is Port Washington Mike? I live in SE Ohio (Hill Country) But our population is still about the same as it has been for the past 25-30 years after the hide prices dropped to nothing. If your hunting a nice hound, you can average 2-3 coon per night down here. How long have you been hunting? and what do you average per night where you live?

Seems like ours is about the same.. unless I hunt my male dog.. then it’s seems like they are almost extinct

Just a little north east of you off i77. Been hunting for right around 40 years. The average is 2-4 coons a night for a three to four hour hunt. I noticed early in the fall we were not getting as many tracks as usual. Talked with some local farmers the other day. They said they have been finding coons dead all year. Drive a little bit away from here and things seem normal.

Don't be saying the coon population is thin in Ohio, people will use that for an excuse not to hunt the RQE's !!!!!!! LOL

Sounds to me like distemper. We’ve had it spotty the last 2 Year’s since hides went to crap. Kills the young n weak . Have u killed many yearlings this winter? That should give u your answer. Jmo

Coons

There, ain't hardly any south of Hillsboro, i'm seeing less, the last 4 years, can't hardly hit one, saw one up a tree all summer. I don't have the dog power, i use to have, and i've been at it, for 60 years. One of my dogs, went a mile deep, 5 years ago, young coon, and it stunk.

Coons

Well, Engle, lives about a mile and one half from me, now you know them walker dogs don't need coon knocked out to them. They come out of moma treeing, and those high powered coon dogs, those boys, have got. They just show them a picture, of a coon, and they go to treeing them, saves a lot of time, and makes for, a good short cut.

Population

If its distemper I would suspect you would fine sign of it. Try putting some feeders out late winter early spring. This will pull sows in the area and once they den up with the young. You can pull the feeders and often times they will stay there till the fall if the habitat is decent.

Coon shortage ???

Up here on a good night you can tree 10+ . But no problem treeing 6-8 on a average night.
