Looks like a good idea as long as it doesn't get wet in there. Doesn't look like enough of a lip to keep the rain out of the box.

That's a little different twist on a dirt nap.

Hole is to big, to close to the ground. Good idea poor design.

Wouldn't work in North

you get 6 to 8 inches of snow and dog would have to dig out.

Not to mention the "frost line"...factor....once it's submerged into the earth......brrrrrrrr.....in winter.

Actually no not cold, my parents live in a berm home. It's cool in the summer and warm in the winter, easy to heat and cool. I think this is a great idea.
Now this design is awesome! https://youtu.be/FwWfZlWSR9Q

Frost line here is 3 - 4 foot deep.... don't think I'd want my dog surrounded by ice.

In South Louisiana we would call that a dog drowner.

interesting... would think it wouldn't be good in rain if the wind is the wrong direction it would blow right in

This is how I buld mine

https://youtu.be/VcgziU9aA7E

This is how I build mine , use 3/4 in treated plywood, I keep mine a little higher off ground also the entrance to the larger compartment I keep 7 inches from base to entrance hole to keep lots of straw in. I also put a removable second roof inside over the larger nesting side by screwing 2X2's around the top an inch down and cut a plywood section to fit. I also use 2X4's all the way around the big roof section to keep drafts out and weighted down

That is a very similar set up to how my doghouses are. From the entrance to the nesting box has more of a lip in all of mine to hold the bedding in, some of mine would be smaller and some bigger houses then that looks to be. My bigger doghouses are also built up on the bottom so they are higher off the ground when we get a lot of snow in the winter
