Valu pak dog food
I was feeding the red bag and liked it I started feeding the black back and the dog don't over heat now when he's treed but he has lost a lot of weight he acts fine. I have wormed him out if that don't work going to switch back to red bag.Has anyone else had this problem?
.
I think it keeps them thinner but in good shape, if that makes sense. They are more athletic looking. I have some deer dogs on it that have covered a lot of ground the past couple weeks and they just look healthy. Kind of thin but not poor.
They have plenty of energy. I think we get use to seeing a slightly over weight dog and think that is how they should look. I always have went by the hip bones and want to see that area rounded and the bones not showing. This food the weight is there but it just doesn't look like fat. My final decision is still out but don't see any issues at the present time.
I keep telling myself that if it was 28/24 instead of 28/20 it would be better but it seems to be working for now.

I have only been feeding the 24 20 for a month so the jury is still out. Some of mine had loose stool but others adjusted fine. I believe some of that was slightly overfeeding. I'm seeing what I believe is what Bruce was trying to describe. The dogs do look good on it so far and have plenty of energy. I have an old collie and she has been having skin and coat problems but is getting better on this feed. The two meats as the first two ingredients is different than I have seen and the look of my dogs is similar to a buddy of mines dogs when he is feeding them deer scraps.

I was given a bag to try about a month ago. I am only using it on one dog. He has been a tough keeper and looses weight very easily when hunted hard. I have tried several different feeds and was even feeding him 6 cups of ProPlan at one point trying to keep weight on him. The Valupak has been able to keep his weight steady. It did take him about 2 weeks for stool to tighten back up but energy level has went through the roof. He is lean and trim just as everyone else has described. I will be keeping him on this through the winter. Real good feed at a great price in my opinion.

I switched mine from diamond to value pack 28-20 and all of my dogs have gained weight. The house dog, yard dog and hounds have done real well on it. My old dog thinned down a little at first but added a half cup to her normal amount and she's back up.
I can get the 28 20 for a dollar more a bag that the 24 20 but the ingredients look almost identical. Is the 28 20 worth the extra dollar a bag since I'm not hunting the dogs that hard?

Value Pak
I have fed the red bag 24/20 for the past year. My dogs are doing very well on it.
-
Keep in mind that the black bag 28/20 contains 422kcals per cup. The red bag 24/20 contains 490 kcals per cup.
-
A dog will need to be fed a little more of the black bag to get the same amount of calories. It makes sense that they would lose weight if you feed the same amount of the black vs the red.
-
If the dog is acting good and not overheating I would leave him on the black bag and give him just a little more feed AFTER a hunt. Leave it the same on days you don’t hunt. You could easily overheat him if you feed too much of the 28% protein feed. Particularly in hot/humid weather.

The valu pak salesman told me the red bag is very popular and sells quite a bit same as the blue bag...I used the black bag for a while but like the blue better...
In the last month I been buying dog chow with chicken...57 pounds for about 22 bucks and mixing it 50/50 with the blue bag...the dogs love it and I am having to cut back on feed a little more than usual...

I have had great results with the black bag dogs have more energy they are muscled up and only one pile of crap to clean up a day
.
To the deer hounds during deer their running season the Black Bags are fed. Same with a coonhound being hunted hard. Rest of the time we feed the blue bag.
I have a hound here that is a taller leaner built hound. I have spared no expense trying different feeds to put more weight on him. Including the most expensive several brands have to offer. I always went back to valu-pak Raised one litter of pups on it also with good results.
