pups 1st fur season

I have a young dog that is about ready to be singled out this season. I'm curious to see what everyone's thoughts on how many coons he gets shot out if any.

Do you shoot out 1 a night?

Shoot 1 out every other tree?

Or shoot every coon out he trees?

I live in very thick coons also so it wouldn't hurt the population at all.

There is no formula, every pup is an individual. I will say this much though, I have a close friend who has won the World Hunt and the TWBFA Puppy Hunt 3 times, all with dogs he raised and trained himself and he has never left one sit in his life

Some people say they shoot coons out for the dogs but usually they shoot them out for themselves. We are hunters descended from prehistoric times. Most of us have a killer instinct deep inside. It comes from back when we either killed something or went hungry. Just look at all of the deer hunters. Why do they kill deer? Why do we look forward to opening of the season so much and get so excited?
With that said, each pup is different. You have to know your pup. Some need coons and some it hurts. How excited does your pup get when he gets one? Does he quit treeing when you get there and just watch and wait for a coon to hit the ground. Does he get tree happy when you knock a coon out? Does he only tree for a couple of minutes and then trail on?
Depnding on your coon population, you might need to keep them thinned down or Mother Nature will do it for you and she can be very cruel.

If hunting on public land I usually only shoot out 1 coon per night during season and never more than 2, on private land I shoot one out of every tree till I limit out, the private land I hunt on they want the coons thinned out due to crop ,creep feeder damage etc.

I am a proponent of shoot one out of every tree a pup trees on in hide season.. But i've not raised any world beaters, but a few i liked an awful lot.

And we have a strong coon population to boot.

I keep reading on this forum that knocking too many out causes slick treeing. I find the opposite to be true.

Well, if you can't kill coons with a coondog for fear it will ruin them, then what the heck they good for?

Coon

follow chewbachs advise. He knows well enuff. Best ones I've seen don't know difference between season or not.
