Chilly, Frosty 2017 Indiana opener in the books!!
Pretty darn chilly last night for the IN opener, glad i got all those balmy nights in MI in October!!
I cut the pup and hot Mama loose at 6:30 pm and didn't look up a tree until 7:30 pm. They struck a coon 743 yards in and trailed that coon 500 yards off a timber knob across a 100 acre marsh, around a small soybean field into a wet finger of trees and the pup fell treed first and after a bit Ring came into him and they had one. Knocked it out and let them wool it a bit and petted them up. Thought well, that took a while, but was pretty easy.. Famous last words..
Cut them off of that one and they only went about 200 yards and Ring fell treed, the pup checked it about 5 times (arent these Garmin's great!!) and kept wanting to take a track off but couldn't, finally settled in and treed with her (first time hes ever done this, he's almost too independent at times). Well then the fun started..
They were only 200 yards away, but there was a hundred yards of water around them in every direction and boys it was hip boot high and real close to my vitals!!Real close! I could see they were treed in a huge oak tree full of leaves from my side of the swamp and I could see the coon about 2/3 of the way up looking at me from 100 yards out..
Well not to belabor a looong, careful short walk through some deep water. I finally made the bit of high ground and got to the dogs..
Took me 20 minutes to find that darn coon up close like that.. finally shot into the only dark spot i could see about where i thought he was.. Yep, it was him and that sucker rolled out ready to throw down..
Now the pup has had a couple of tussles, but nothing like a mostly live PO'ed IN coon that had just been knocked out of a 75 foot oak.. Was a whole new ball game that he had not played before, but he learned quick.. Learned which end of that sucker bites and locks on.. The bad thing is hot Mama had the coon by the butt (her favorite kill dog hold LOL) and was jerking with all her might..
Man did that honk off Ranger and after he got done squalling, sqealing and trying to get away. He stood back blowed at that coon a few times and piled in and demolished that sucker.. I mean this pup was mad and that coon was gonna pay and did.. He's a pretty good sized pup, 70 lbs at 8 months old and was on a mission.
I pulled Ring off and let him have his sweet revenge for a good bit and then had to pry him off it..
Petted him up and headed to the truck. I was about 3/4 of a mile in a beautiful hardwood and swamp bottom, so i let the pup run loose as i walked back to the truck.. He got tracky once, but never opened and never took it anywhere on the walk back..
Petted them both up, loaded up and headed home.. was in by 10 pm and had a pretty nice hunt..
Gonna be colder tonight and i'm taking the pup by himself.. Man i love this time of year and hunting a young dog!!!
Good read. As short as I am it would have drowned Jimmy and the twins. lol
Chilly??? It was downright cold to a Southern boy. You really had to love it to hunt pups last night.
Sounds like a good time Larry!! We had a good frosty night down here too, coon moved awesome for our opening night and never stopped. We made our last drop at 5a.m. and was treed pretty quick. Glad I took today off work lol, I'd hated to quit early on all the fun. Good luck rest of your season.
And Richard I know what you mean, I was bundled up last night n they kept asking what I was gona do when it really gets cold!! my family has been up here for almost 20 years and my Tennessee roots still get cold easy lol. I'm usually in long johns by Halloween and stay in them til march lol.

Hunt
Great posts guys as I really enjoyed reading them. We treed accross a river last night, saw the coon but could not get across the river ( swimming water ). We resorted to some trickery, shot the gun and threw a hedgeapple in the water to get dog in river and called him over to us. I was sure glad to get him as I was not swimming the river to get to him. Our coon move pretty good here down until about 25 degrees (gonna hit that or lower tonight).. I'd say the the hunting got better as the night went on last night as the wind switched up out of the south and warmed up before daylight.
was 29 degrees when i headed to the truck and i figured i'd already pushed dumb luck as far as I could hunting a pup in this weather.. Gonna cut once or twice right at dark tonight and be done early again ( i sincerely hope)
We are supposed to make a high in the mid 20's tomorrow so i'm guessing i'll be laid up with the hound tomorrow night..I live 9 miles from the MI line and we get a pretty good winter here at times. Not unusual to get a real cold snap at the beginning of kill season then it usually moderates for a couple weeks.
How far south do you live Jkidd?
I'm hoping we get a fairly open winter as i'd like to kill a bunch of coon to this pup i'm hunting.. He's had 15 in his mouth now and 11 in the last 5 weeks and likes them pretty well.
Larry, I'm about 3hrs south of the MI line, not far from Autumn Oaks. Last night was the first good frost we'd had but it was nice and still hardly no wind. We treed almost every coon in an oak last night. We treed 11 last night, but we had all older dogs, the youngest was 3yr old. And I with you, I'd say Friday night would do no good to a young dog.

Good country down around Richmond, i hunted there a number of times in the 80s.. I'll take the cold and frosty over hot and humid any night..
Good luck and enjoy!!
2nd Night
Well the 2nd night of season was kinda crisp too. Okay..it was down right cold!
In the last 2 nights all of the coon harvested have been VERY VERY FAT. I hope that doesn't mean it's going to be a long cold winter. Anyone else notice that?
Richard, did it take all 3 of those redbones to tree that coon? LOL Just pickin, I got 1/2 of one in my kennel and her and I are peas and carrots so far.

That is a fine looking handler in that photo Richard and not too bad of a looking coon and hounds, but they are funny colored!! Don't think they meet breed standard for the TW do they?
Well i have to say, i walked out last night, stood on the front porch and watched the wind blow, looked at the forecast and me and the pup stayed home.. Don't think there was much to be gained hunting him in that weather.. I'd just as soon not push him into a deer or coyote race if i can help it..
8 months old still, we will pick our nights and battles as much as we can.
Jeremy Kidd, when this old guy gets there. Linda said NO all night stuff she would miss too much. lol
Roy, we'll have to quit early then n have u home by the time birds chirp. Opening night was awesome, but last night (WHEWW) wind was blowing good, we cut loose and Rex took us through some nasty spots 750 yards for a big ol cotton wood den. Then next drop he was gone 30mins n not a bark so I hollered him in n I had deer hunting on my mind for this morning so we headed for the home place.
Gonna be down right cold tonight but all the boys are wanting to pack up n go to a $$ hunt so I guess I'll try n stay tough lol.
