Old threads show a change in perception in the Redbone breed...

This board has been pretty dead for awhile and we have seen very few good informative discussions that really matter and bring people out to contribute....Most of us know why....
So I thought I would go back and bring to the top some of threads that sparked some very good discussions and brought a lot of people out to compare notes and comment. So over the past few days I went through threads as far back as they go (2012) and brought up to the top some of the ones I found interesting or very informative. One thing I have noticed after reading through many, many of these is the changing of a few perceptions within the breed ...now vs then.
I see several...but the only one I am going to point out is the perception concerning the importance of using better females in our breeding programs and what a difference it seems to be making....
You will have to read through some of these older threads if you want to discover the other ones.
But it is pretty striking the changes some have made in this breed and the resulting progress in certain areas where performance is tracked.
It's also interesting to read back over all the predictions and "called shots" that were made on hyped up crosses...and compare them to what we actually see today some 4 or 5 years later. Who's crystal ball was full of accurate predictions...and who's was just full of hot air ....or something else

Well so far I dont think I've changed my mind much about "perception" other than a couple of things from 4 to 5 years ago.
1. One thing I would add to my list would be longevity. It seems the good ones we do have to compete dont have long term stamina to keep up. Its seems to me alot of the tri-color dogs keep competing and winning at older ages. How do we make this better?? Its seems some of these Redbones get retired really early for some reason. So who has the answer for this? Is this heart, determination, breeding, or just in there makeup.
2. Another thing would be is titles, I have started getting more involved with the $$$ hunts in my area than I used to because the competition is better and the week hunts work better for my shedule. I guess what I'm saying is that UKC Grand title means alot less to me than it once did. In my area it doenst take much of a dog get titled these days, due to the lack of competition and attendance at the UKC hunts in my area. So in the future I will probably not waste my time getting one to "Grand" status at a young age and focus more on Super Stakes and $$$ money earnings. This is just personal preference and where the competetion levels are in my particular area.

I still know what it takes to compete with these big time tri-color dogs.
I got tired of waiting to find a Redbone like it so I went and bought half of a Tri-color to compete.
So who has changed there mind on what kind of dog it takes to compete at these levels??
I still havn't seen any pictures on the front the bloodlines or prohound of Redbones winning any National or World hunt yet.
So all we can do is keep trying crosses and keep training in different ways to try are hand at keeping up with some of these others. I think that there has been some good crosses made and some have worked out and some havn't.

Its just fun taking some of these red dogs to hunts.

Jared, some good points. Strictly as a breed view, winning with a walker is the path of less resistance. The sheer # places their odds way above every other breed. Now place breeds aside anyone knows it takes a really special dog to consistently win at a major level, an experienced handler, lots of disposable money, lots of free time, and lets be honest, also doing as much as you can to stack the deck whenever possible. So when a man/woman can do all that with a less popular breed, it sure seems like much more of an accomplishment to me. Like you mentioned sorta, nobody notices a magazine cover with a walker anymore. It’s a sea of the same. Now to say all that makes me a tad hypocritical as the ONLY thing in my kennel that’ll currently tree a coon is a half walker. 😆 But, I’m not about to make a US tour of major hunts either.

Oh, and your spot on with the $kc and grand comments. But they ain’t a chance, despite what personal preference is, that as redbones go people don’t put that GRNT title on the shelf way above $kc PCH. Sounds stupid to me when I say it, but it’s the cold hard facts. Put all the money ya want on it, but people are wired to notice that “GRNTCH”.

So to be “the best coondog” is awesome, and “the best redbone” is awesome, but to be “the best coondog that happens to be red” is better.

I have seen a lot of changes in the Redbone hounds over the last 50 years, people are putting more thought to there breeding program, but we are not as fast of a reproducer as walker or a lot of other breeds, there are a lot of great redbone stud dogs out there that just needs the right genetics match to come up with a world champion hound and in the right hands to puss the dog or dogs in the hunts.

I think i am still on track...

Stud dogs are over rated..

the female is the reproducer

Redbone gene pool is very limited

Jared i cant speak for others but the reason i dont continue to push one until its 6 8 10 yrs old is i am never satisfied..finished dogs dont excite me too much..i am always ready to start on another and looking for that perfect hound lol...always high expectations...young dogs..pups is what drives me..I am about ready to send redbull down the road and start on another he soon be 2 yrs old...funs about over with him for me..
