Dissapointed

I'm disappointed
After reading another post on being Embarrassed I've decided to express my disappointment.
The HORIZON awards were announced in the September issue of Coonhound Bloodlines--ALL breeds had winners except for our breed--REDBONES.
Now I'm not pointing fingers at any one as it may be all our fault. I believe the youth has to be nominated and be 17 or younger & still in school.
Lets get our youth involved & get them nominated for this award.
To me this is a big black eye for our breed by not having a yearly winner and is disappointing as well as embarrassing. Maybe one of our newly elected directors could make this their pet project.
I see a few pictures of some nice young people handling some Red dogs at times, lets all take the next step & nominate some of these youth for this award.
How about thinking and doing it. I can think of a few likely candidates, but I have never met them or personally know them, so those of you who know a great youth lets get them a deserved award.-
Lets get rid of this Blackeye and turn it into a BIG SMILE on some youngster. and return some pride to our REDBONE breed

I'm not sure people fully understand the statements made on the other posts...
It isn't that the Redbone Breed doesn't have good reproducers...its the fact that the reproducer list requirements and criteria are not changing with the times we live in today and therefore showcasing and recognizing studs in our breed that have to produce an unrealistic number of pups just to make the list .....thereby excluding many of our hi percentage reproducers who are bred to a lower number of higher quality females from being shown on the list.
Our breed is better at producing titled Redbones than the stud list shows it to be and when myself and others describe it as embarrassing...we are referring to the current list requirements which is obviously outdated and needs to be changed to reflect the lower number of pups produced by Redbone studs these days. The embarrassment isnt over individual redbones...its over the appearance of our reproducing numbers compared to other breeds on the list who's studs produce 5 or 10 times as many pups as Redbone studs do.
The off breeds are forced to use the same minimum requirements as the walkers and english studs who produce way more pups. The whole point of the discussion on the other thread was to point out that if the minimum requirements we're lowered across all breeds....it would paint a more accurate picture of how Redbone studs are reproducing and they would be shown in a be more accurate and better light (less embarrassing)
If they dropped the minimum number required for a stud to be on that list...our 9th and 10th place studs wouldn't show just 1 titled pup...they would probably show 3 to 5 times that many. It's not fudging numbers or smoke and mirrors to make something look better than it is. All it does is allows dogs who are proving to be really great reproducers ...but that do not and may never produce 100 pups (because their owners believe in quality over quantity)to show that they are infact producing a higher percentage of titled offspring then these studs being bred to any and all females they can be just to get to that magic 100 number. I'm sure no body on any of those lists are embarrassed of their dog and I have said repeatedly that I didn't say I was either. It's the system requirements that make our Redbone studs on the bottom half of that list look like they have embarrassingly low percentages compared to breeds that produce a lot more pups per year.
If they lowered the overall number requirements for all breeds...it won't hurt the walkers or English dogs percentages one bit...but would show a whole new group of great reproducers in the lower half of the lists for other breeds.
Dogs like Rocky Top Jet and Stillwater Chase who probably have 6 or more titled offspring, many of whom are already Grand Nites....those are numbers the redbone breed can be proud of...so why on earth are those high % reproducers not representing our breed on those lists? Because of that 100 pup minimum that's why!
That's the whole point that was trying to be made on the other thread. Nobody was singling out anyone's dog or talking bad about them...it was a discussion about some needed changes to the UKC reproducer list requirements that might actually help the breed by taking some of the pressure off of stud owners to breed females they shouldn't just to reach some unreasonable minimum number to get on that list.

Horizon award

Shane,
I think I understand the post on the reproducers list,
and I agree that the requirements should be changed.
Maybe I was misunderstood when I said I was Disappointed, what I meant was with the lack of a Horizon award winner when all the other breeds were represented. I just referred to the other post as I had been following it. maybe it was my bad and shouldn't have mentioned it.
THE HORIZON award or lack of by the breed was my Disappointment & yes I'd say embarrassing too --JMO

Thumbs up

I agree hersh! I have taken a few young kids huntin around me, but they haven't got the means to have a dog at this part of their life. Hoping to get my nephews hooked this coonhuntin season!

I try to get youths involved when I can. I have given many pups and older dogs to youths... but its an uphill battle for their attention between video games and the great outdoors. Our country is in a sad state and going the wrong way with respect to what we as Americans would like to see youths involved in. Seems too many parents find it easier to let kids waste hours and hours in front of a tv, computer, smartphone or video game screen these days. It's a shame. I try to devote my time and help to various youth hunts each year...but it seems you only see a good turn out of youths at the events that hand out lots of free stuff...
Changing times....wish I had the answer but I'm not sure there is one to downward spiral of youth interest and participation in this sport....

Shane

I get what you are saying, but now sure what the right answer is. I was telling a guy a while back that Griz had like 15 pups and 2 made it to night champion. He told me I needed to go buy up females to get his 100. I told him that I was not into playing that game. I believe in quality, not quantity.

I think the quantity game is bad for the breed. Maybe the numbers made sense 15-20 years ago...but we live in a different world now....

Hunter has taken a break this year to work some younger dogs but he'll be back in the spotlight next year! It'll be his last year as a youth!
