Young dog treeing one tree off.

Over the years I have seen a dog miss and the coon might be one or two trees away. I just have never seen a dog consistently do this. This is not a treed second jealous type of thing. This is alone or with other dogs and this pup is usually first to tree. This dog is about 14 months old and has treed several coon alone. He really does about all you can ask from a dog if he wasnt one tree off more than he should be. Last night he treed two. One on the right tree and one a tree over. Three nights ago he treed three kittens one tree off. Other than some experience and correction do you have any ideas. Not had many layup dogs. Could he be winding them and treeing wrong that way.

Seems like he has more nose than experience to use it wish he was mine just keep hunting him reward him when his right lead him away when he ain't.

Does he bark much on the track on these that he is missing? Are the ones that he is missing setting low in the tree?

One other question how far apart are the trees? No im not thinking they are crossing.

I bet if you'll start noticing which direction the breeze is from, even when it's minimal, your young dog will be missing by a tree on the downwind side. I've seen a couple young dogs with above average noses over the years that did this. I believe they trail up under a coon and lay it up without finishing the track, or sometimes tree a legitimate layup that's slightly upwind. I saw one dog that did this years ago that eventually quit trailing altogether. He'd just cut through the woods working the wind and fall treed with or near a coon. Another dog went through a spell where he'd miss by a tree, but would scoot to the right one with a little correction, and eventually came out of it.

Locating ability is what its about. Most people just think of the distinct bark the dog gives when it first finds the tree but there is a lot more to it than that. A really accurate dog in my experience doesn't tree because that's where the trail seems to have went up. They can find the coon in the tree. The one I'm hunting, when winter gets here will be looking at the coon if its out on a limb. He will be standing at the base but looking in the coons direction. He knows where the coon is. He also hardly ever trees a den without the coon on the outside. I believe that's what your pup is trying to do Bruce. If he can get it right you will really like him. You will also notice that a lot of his trees wont have any track to them. He will just fall treed a lot with the coon in the first fork.

Coon could of tapped tree as he was passing by and that's where the dog thought he was..

I agree with Joey on this one. I had one like that years ago. Dang it, I want another one.

Is the one tree off down wind of the coon?

I think we call it "slik treeing" sum dogs r just bad for it ! 😁

young dog is treeing where he can smell the coon the best on the breeze.. as he gets older he will be feet up on the tree..

sounds like you have a good one and congrats!! enjoy the heck out of him.

LAST NIGHT HE TREED 2 OUT OF 3 . bruce that is 66.67 %. real close to the national average every walker owner seems satisfied with now days .lol at 14 months old he is still young . hunt him another 3 months and look for improvement to see if he meets your standards . if not sell him to some one that 70% satisfies .

Had some do that when young.They are the only ones I hated to see die made the kind you always wish you had back.
