Baying, digging at a hole

Made a couple of quick drops tonight. Not much doing on the first br on the second my old dog went about 130 yards and was treeing or sounded so. I started to him and noticed at times his voice sounded muffled and at other times sounded like normal. When I got in to him he was shoulder deep into a hole in the ground up under a big blown down tree. I looked best I could in the hole but couldn't get a real good look with the angle I had. My old dog sure thought something was there he was counting them out. Has anyone ever seen or heard of a coon going in a hole like this? If not any guess what it could be ?

Yes all the time. Coons live in the ground around here because we have so many sink holes and caves.

They do in other places too, some places they only go in the ground around a creek.

Other things go in the ground too, dillers specifically but you usually can tell that.

Possoms will sometimes go in the ground and so will foxes and skunks.

start looking around for armadillos. was told at the world hunt they are moving up that way. from what you described, your old dog has a taste of an addiction you will never rid him of.

HAAAAHAAAA! Give me all them bad boy coonhounds that aquire an armadillo addiction that you cant GET RID OF!! An armadillo ain't no different to break em off of than a possum, or a deer, or chasing cars! DON'T believe it! To say you can't break one off of a diller is plum nuts. All but one of mine in 20 years have broken themselves. The one took a few swats with a switch while she was after em. It's called training. Don't be afraid of it, or armadillos.

Don't let them tree in a hole, period.

I've heard of teaching your dog to leave a hole. It's always confused me, because I've personally had dogs put coons in holes. Don't get me wrong, I've had dogs put plenty possums and armadillos is holes too. Anytime I can see off game, I discipline the dog. If I can't see it, we just go on.... Soon enough, they quit armadillos... they quit possums.... but they will ALWAYS go wherever a coon goes. Most of the time that means a tree. Sometimes though, it's a hole in a creek bank, or a hole up under a tree. Seems like we get at least one or two each year bayed up under a big bluff rock, or even in caves. I can't stand crawling off in a cave after one. Freaks me out. I've had to do it though, when one of my dogs decides to have selective hearing! 😂 I guess my point is, mine won't ever be hole broke, cause I can't whup em for chasing a coon to the end of the trail. There are a lot of holes in these hills, and sometimes a coon decides to take refuge in one. Not often, but sometimes.

we have had dillers here for 20 years ,lol the dillers dont run far and are easy to brake them from . most of the time they stop on there own . the deer hogs and occasional bear somewhat tougher .lol a possum a mile deep without a bark for 1 hour just another peace of the puzzle in the training program around these parts . a good scolding and switching and move on . lol

Goes back to intelligence, most are smart enough to train not to stay at a hole and also a hole is a good place for a fight to get started

so if your dog leaves a hole and the 8 minutes gets him cause he didnt find another track you would rather take - points ? i rather take a chance on being luck seeing a coon in the hole or circle points . lol

Posted by rob thompson on 10-02-2017 12:04 PM:

Ill take my chances if one stays in that hole it keeps the 8 off or babbled will! And if they don't hunt hard enough to find another coon they don't make the cull.

I found the tards. Rob and swamp

I don't give a sh!t if the dog runs a coon up a tree, in a hole, into a barn, or up a telephone pole as long as the dog ends with the coon.

Is a hole not good enough for you lol

I'd have bunch of culls cause 25% of runs end up in holes or under a bank, another 25% in pines.

I hate pines maybe I'll break my dogs from treeing coons in a pine tree

Hole broke dogs---Your dogs rocking a track then all of a sudden it ends-pooff

"Must have gone in a hole"= good excuse

Lol,gophers, groundhogs, beavers and muskrats and minks go in holes, uh uh uh them skunk apes go up them pines, lol. Then again it could be rocking a track of the dreaded ink wink.they run so hard and jump so fast they back track though their **** hole and poof vanish like a fart in the wind. You don't want to be looking in there for them,Lol

I think the reason Rob was saying to not tree in holes was because even if your dog puts a coon in a hole you aren't going to be able to see it and in a comp hunt if you can see it you can't score it. So if you walk a long way to get there it was for nothing. Why not break them from any holes so that they get gone from there and get under something you can see and potentially score. Disclaimer here though I'm from southwest Ms and 99% of the time they put something in a hole here it is not a coon. I have heard coons go in holes in tennessee and other places where there are bluffs and rocks.

Pines

Down south there's plenty of pines,no problems. Its all that swamp water that causes the problem. Them Gawga swamps is tuff. Sometimesa ya gotsa go noodling to gets um outsa them mudholes.Lol. X2 on a hole down south,99% of time it ain't a coon so you break your hound off holes solve some trash problems.

I understand not wanting them in a cave. But when my dog put a coon in a cave, what am I supposed to do? Beat his butt cause he chased a coon to the end of the track? And he's gonna understand it's because of the cave, not the coon? Do I just take pups into caves and start switching them? Shove their head in a hole and tear em up? Make em scared of a hole? Then shock em when they put a coon in one? I'M CONFUSED! My dog would be too. Where coons don't go in holes, I can see it. But here, they do from time to time. So if I tried to correct my dog for holes, I'm going to be working on breaking him off coons too. All I can see is me ruining a good dog trying to break one off holes. Break em off dillers and possums and you won't have a bunch of holes. But wearing a dog out for putting a coon in a hole, nawwwwww, I can't do that. I'll follow mine wherever the coon takes him. That's the deal you make with a coon dog.
