Introduction with question

Hello everybody, I am from Texas and have hog hunted with Cur dogs for close to 10 years now. I just don't go much anymore. I have been thinking of getting a coon dog for pleasure hunting to get my working dog fix and to take my son hunting with me.

My question is, and i know it is a broad question. But what percentage of coon dog bred pups will make a decent coon dog?

In the hog dog world, i know what it takes to find that once in a lifetime dog. Between me and my hunting buddies I have seen lots of pups come and go that were nothing more than help dogs. I have a good one now and she won't ever go anywhere.

I think a hog dog would have to be a little harder to find a good one due to how much a hog travels and don't stay in one place too long.

I'd like to have a coon dog I could drop at some deer corn/protein feeders or a creek bottom and take my boy with me and have some fun. I can't spend 1000 dollars and a good dog, but don't want to go through a lot of pups to find one that will range out, strike and tree its own coon.

So i guess in summary, what are my chances of picking out a hound pup that comes from hunting parents and it will turn out to make a decent enough dog? I would think a hound would have a better nose and drive than an average cur dog.

Does anybody hunt around North Texas, I haven't been able to find too many people.

If you can find one that has coon treeing parents then the odds increase. I have hunted a lot of critters with dogs, a coondog that is really nice with not very many holes in it is one of the hardest to find of any hunting dog. It sounds like your looking for a mediocre one to just enjoy some time with your son? If I was you I would save some money and while I was doing that be looking around. Most hound pups sell for between $250 to $400. I could break the rest of it down for you but trust me its way more expensive to raise and train your own then to buy one already teeing coons. You can find one to run and tree for around $1000 and your done. Or you can pay $250 to $400 for the 5 pups you will go through and waist 2 or 3 years. either way you decide I hope you and your son have a ball doing it.

Find an older finished hound for $1000 or even less and you'll be able to hunt right away and without the headache. Spending a lil extra on a dog you've seen tree a coon is a far better investment than spending a lot less on a pup that may never. Your child will likely have fun either way, but most wanna see or shoot something occasionally. Good luck either way..

x2 with the seeing the dog tree a coon . try before you buy. you can always add a pup to the mix at a latter time and use the older dog to help start it .
