????? About kennel runs that extend inside

I am in process of new kennels and I'm goin to build 8- 5x10 runs on slab outside and have a door that comes in side of a 24x40 building, my que st ion is if I make runs inside also 5x5 just big enough for house and food and water, will they go outside to use restroom or will they use inside also? I know I know it's a dumb question but I'd like to have runs inside also instead of house straight against the wall but I don't want a mess inside either, thanks for replys

If you hunt some of these tacked up walkers you'll get a mess everywhere. Jmo.

I hunt xbred hounds

Most xbreed hounds I've had usually found a spot for the waste and used it.. leave them in the out side run until they establish it and they should continue to use the same place after that. Again jmo.

Answer

I have 2 runs like you describe (for the last 20 years). I like them. Most dogs will go outside.
Keep the area inside as small as possible. Build it, so if they do go inside, it's easy access for you to clean it up. I've cleaned up 2 messes inside, just in the last 3 years (Same dog).
When I build a new kennel, it will be the same. Except I'll put doors/gates inside also, for easy access to clean out boxes.
Mine is set up so the dogs can jump up and lay on top of their boxes, they do this a lot in the summer. I feed pups on top of the box, they learn to jump and load this way.

I have this set up, 5 by 10 outside, 5 by 5 inside, I also put panels on the top inside, with the dog box inside, thought shorter distance to jump out. Have flapper doors, thinking about putting in chute doors, so if I hunt near they are locked inside. Won't hear other one bark.. Always been good with your question, one I have now, goes inside if it's raining.??

Posted by les condra on 09-26-2017 11:37 PM:

Philip what is the chute door? I also will be hunting pups near the kennels and would also like to keep em in

My dog has exactly what you described and he went outside to use the bathroom from day 1. And he's a walker

Some will some won't.

I agree on not making the inside area to large as that is when they will usually go inside.

Here are a few pics of my kennels

I guess you could have just a swinging door that latches open and shut. I was thinking redneck, attach some channel iron on both sides, then you would slide piece of plywood with handle down the channel.
Those are some of the nicest kennels I have seen Robinson.

I have the same setup you describe. 5x5 inside and 5x10 outside. I really like it. No messes inside. Since this photo was taken I have added rotating food bowls. I taught the one on the right to use a Gundog door in the Winter. They also sell guillotine closures if you want to keep the dog in:
