Here are some coon hunting and life facts to ponder
I have been coon hunting since i was in diapers so i am no stranger to the sport. For as long as i can remember it has been a family sport. I am a English dog man and have had lots of fun with my dogs both pleasure hunting as well as competition hunting. I have many friends who hunt the same as myself and many who hunt other breeds. We all poke fun at one another about our breed of choice but its all in fun. There is a difference between this and some of what i see posted from time to time. Guys we need to back up to the times when we all loved the hunt and respected one another. At the end of the hunts a pat on the back and a handshake for the winner is not that hard to do. Sure there is always going to be a bad apple here and there and that will never change just like not all will be truthful when selling a dog. But the fact remains its still a family sport and if we dont try a little harder to do the right things then what are we teaching the children that are coming up in the sport. Treat folks like you would want to be treated or even better treat someone like you would want them to treat your mama or daddy. Life is short and doing the right things along the path will enrich your life and others lives. The sport of coon hunting was a wonderful thing when i came into it and i hope it will be when i leave this world. How many sports are there out there where children can compete side by side with the older folks? The answer is not many. You want to see numbers rise at the clubs? If so try these things. Be honest in your dealings, honest on your calls, see coons that are there and not the ones that aint, be an honest judge or guide, show no favortism, be a good sport win or lose, try to educate the kids coming along as to right and wrong and my friends the numbers will rise and you just might sleep better at night. No hunt will ever be held at a location that will satisfy everyone, coons dont always stir well, dogs make mistakes, handlers make mistakes but if we would all go back to our roots and treat it more like a pleasure hunt, you might find you actually like the guys youre competing against. My Daddy always told me son just call the dog by what he does and let the chips fall where they may. The older i get the smarter i have figured out my daddy is. Preserve the family oriented sport by being a honest hunter, and a respectful hunter and try to make the sport better than you found it. Congrats to the New World hunt Champ X bred Sambo !

Well said David! I have hunted hard for years when I was younger but never hard enough to become a world champ. Now with that said just because another person puts more time effort in thier dog then all the rest you can't be mad or hate them! Be happy for them. congratulations to sambo for doing a great job! I'm proud to congratulate our new world champ! I'm a walker man through and through but you can't take nothing away from this dog for treeing a coon! X-bred looks like thier going to have a good showing this yearns years to come!

Years back I think most people believed in the golden rule but I'm afraid now most don't even know what it is. Good post.

Well i dont have all the answers but i do know this is a good place to start. I think we should all be thankful to have the opportunity to compete. I have lost several hunting buddies over the years so i think still being above ground with the chance to still enjoy our sport shouldnt be taken for granted. UKC does a great job helping us with this opportunity so i figure its the least we can do. It can only get better if we all do our part by doing whats right. Its actually pretty simple.

.
DJames you are very correct. But you hit the nail on the head, when you mentioned Families. The Families in this country are becoming a thing of the past just like the family sport of coon hounds have. Go to Facebook and read the post from most of the young people in this sport. They use the F word in every other sentence. They show no respect for anyone including themselves.
I personally have know some of the greatest men in this sport. Their kids didn't come close to what they were.
We want to talk about breeding and training dogs on here. Please don't get me started about children. We have let a generation of kids run wild for the most part. The Parents that haven't are in the minority and falling fast. I am not saying give up on the kids. I am saying the brakes have to be put on fast or all is lost.
We can't even talk on this board about giving a dog discipline. Heaven forbid you want to discipline a child. I say we have no future if we don't discipline them and teach them to be accountable for their actions and there is a price to pay for the wrong actions.
