Snake vaccine

Just had a dog get bit by what we believe was a copperhead. He is recovering well. The vet told me they now have a shot called the Rattlesnake vaccine that lessens the effects of a poisonous snake bite when bit. You get the initial vaccination then a month later get a booster. Anyone know anything about this vaccine?

A buddy mine dog got bites by snake on creek he had been vaccinated and his foot swelled some but nothing major and he was back hunting him 3 days later. I give my dog vac before hunting rice fields she never was biten but I never noticed any negative affects from the vac.

not meaning to take over your thread,

but do they do any good for eastern diamond backs and cottonmouths? since the vaccine is developed specifically for the western diamondback?

I don't believe that vaccine was developed exclusively for western diamondbacks. It's my understanding it works on the toxins of "any" pit viper.

the searches that I've done on the vaccine say "was developed for the Western diamondback rattlesnake"

under a google search for "venomous snake vaccine for dogs" this is the first result

http://www.embracepetinsurance.com/...lesnake-vaccine

"The rattlesnake vaccine was developed to protect against the venom of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake."

And actually goes on to say "The vaccine provides no protection against venom from the Coral Snake, Water Moccasin, or Mojave Rattlesnake."

when a big eastern bites one, go get the shovel. he/she is done. I had one vaccinated with shot, and the company that manufactors the drug stated it did offer limited protection on cotton mouths, but nothing on the eastern. I paid the ones they have out west no mind, since I knew he wasn't coming into contact with them.

to note, he was bitten by a fairly large timber rattler and all that happen was the leg became swollen overnight, but it never slowed him down. bitten on Saturday night and hunted him to a cast win on Wednesday night. never knew he was bitten.

My vet told me $22 for initial shot but didn't mention cost of follow-up. He told me it would be good for any snakes we have here which is rattlers and copperheads. I too have read it was created for western diamondbacks.
