Foxtails

I hate summer time just cause the foxtails. Anyone else have issues with them? My basset hound got one in between his toes so I'm gonna have to take him to the vet Monday. Anyone have any home remedies for foxtails?

Luckily we don't have them in this part of the country. When I was stationed in California I got with some hounds men and found out about the fox tails. Fro what I seen if they got into the paws or ears you pretty much had too go too a vet and have minor surgery too get all of the barbs out. Good luck

You can try drawing ointments and salves. Epsom Salt Ointment over the wound area and then bandage the foot. It draws them out of feet really good. The best paste I used was for horses called Magma Paste. It's just epsom salt paste though. Change bandages daily. You can slather a bunch on the bandage before putting the bange on the foot.

Should I get any antibiotics while I'm doing this?

Epsom salts will help draw infection out of the foot too. I'd just give it 24-48 hours and if you don't draw any foxtails out then I'd take the dog to a veterinarian. If the paw is red and warm and painful I would take the dog to the veterinarian right away.

Wrap that foot with Epsom salt paste either way. You might find it in the horse section of a farm supply store. You can make your own paste also by adding a small amount of Epsom salt to water and stirring until it forms a paste. You can warm the mixture up if it gets to thick and add more water to it.
Apply it to the foot and the bandage and wrap it as a poultice. The other name for this paste is magnesium sulfate paste. Here is generic form of the one I mentioned above.
