training question?

I got a year old pup that'll burn a track as good as a good broke dog but when he gets to tree he'll bark a few times then try running another track. My question is if i would rub a hide on the tree every now and then and let him smell it could this help him with his treeing? Caged coon is not really doable do to our low coon population and where i can hunt i can't trap so what do you guys think or is there anything else i could do?

Any advice will be appreciated,
Eric

run him with a light on his collar so you can keep track of him and stay close to him. When you see him hit a tree, walk in and tie him to it, and give him a couple of them. It shouldnt take him long to figure it out.

Rubbing a hide would be going in the wrong direction. He needs to learn to tree with the scent the coon leaves. He's still young, he'll figure it out.

qchounds and shadinc thank you for the advice i'm gonna just keep putting him in the woods and tie him to the tree. I can't give up on him yet he's too smart.
