A word of advice.

If you're planning on paying big money for a good started dog, or broke dog.......try it out first!!!! I have met some "Good Ole Boys" that are as nice as you would want to meet, but money does crazy things to people. Sometimes you will buy a dog that is NOTHING like they said it was, and once they get your money, it's all over but the crying. They will not make it right......period!!! Most guys are pretty honest, and will stand behind their word, but there are some that won't.

Sounds like you ran into some trouble, very sorry to hear this. In your last sentence you might want to switch the words "some" and "most"....you have them backwards!!!
There is only one place where the more you spend the happier you get...Mexico!!!!

I was trying a nice young hound but decided to take him back. I just had more than I needed but still looking for a super. This hound needed some hunting but sure go looking a half mile and tree coon. A fella had called looking for a nice hound so I called him and he told me he certainly wanted the dog and to buy him. This fella is a sheriff and suppose to be honest and a professional. The fella left me hanging with the dog. I did sell the dog and he treed three singles the night I sold him. The man has treed several coon and likes him. Bottom line, you better not take anyone for their word unless you know there honest. Sorry you got taken on the deal.

Much of this results from the wide disparity between what coonhunters describe as "well started". There is an equally wide variation between what we would even describe as a coondog, a finished dog or a lightly started pup. Granted, I have zero experience buying anything other than weanling pups but I think often it is more a difference in how one would rate a dog than outright dishonesty. But certainly, you buy anything without trying it first, you purty much deserve what you got. And you are right Craig, you buy one from me, I'm not buying it back, especially not after someone has spent two weeks ruining a good dog.

Dean, I sold my two year old Sara gyp to a guy down the road last fall. She was a super nice pleasure dog, NtCh and won $850 in a Super Slam hunt but really just a common coondog. Not a dog you were ever gonna win anything big with. Not enough drive, not enough hunt. Nice old mans dog.
So my buddy Daniel Wilson runs into this guy at an auction last weekend and he is telling Daniel about this female he had at his house and how he was very sure she was the best coondog in Indiana. Only thing is Daniel had hunted with her and against her since she was a pup and of course, knew better.
Its all in the eye of the beholder.

I have bought young "started" dogs before that were culls to me, No matter how much the seller has won or well known they are trust only who you know for sure.
On another note I bought a young female a few years back that one of the great trainers of our sport said "She doesnt have what it takes to be a big time winner" and after a winter of hunting and turning down some very good offers on , She was sold for 5 figures and placed in the top 20 of the UKC world as 2 year old. The next spring she was killed on the road.

There is no way that i would ever buy a dog that has any kind of decent price tag on it without it setting under a coon. I will not buy a dog without hunting it. If you do....you have more money than you have sense

Also, all dogs have bad nights. Its hard to judge a dog on just one night. So even hunting with it and buying your taking a chance because the next night...it may look like a complete idiot. There dogs. I would encourage a trial run with half the money in the owners hand. if their honest and want to sell....theyll go for it.

First, it didn't happen to me. It has happened in the past. I gave away about 2,000.00 in no good dogs in the past two years. I have (knowing better) bought dog's on the word of a friend, or one that was highly recommended. I either cull or give them away. I will not sell a worthless dog.

I have a good friend that bought a dog on MY recommendation, and paid 2,000 for a started dog. The first night he hunted him, the dog bit him and fought another dog. I know the dog that he fought, and he is an older Gr.Nt.Ch. with a great disposition. He called the guy the first night, and was told he had never seen it before. My mistake, which was a huge mistake, was in assuming the man would make it right. I was wrong. I brought the dog here, to work him for my friend, and took him back the next day. I didn't want him here one night. He was bad. I didn't do anything but unload him. My friend got ruff with him one day, when he really came after him while tied on the chain. He meant business. He ended up giving the dog away, telling him what he had seen, and the first night out, the dog bit him too. I was disappointed that NO EFFORT was made to make things right. Several guys came forward and have told similar horror stories about the same guys. I was really fooled b/c I thought these guys were ....well, different than that.

I can't understand anyone not wanting to make things right IF THE DOG DOES NOT PERFORM LIKE THE SELLER SAID IT WOULD.......and that means anyone. A dog is a dog, but another guy bought a dog, and the dog was supposed to be a broke dog. He has hunted it at least thirty times or more, and it has not showed him one coon. The dog has struck several tracks......no coon. He brought the dog here, and we hunted it, and it would not do anything. We even turned a coon loose in front of it and it did not tree the coon. It slick treed, while two pups went on to tree the coon.

The POINT I am making is, DON'T TRUST ANYONE, or take their word for it.......PERIOD!!!! Money makes people do things that might be totally out of character for them. If I sell a dog, and it does not perform for the buyer as it did for me.....I not only WILL take it back; I WANT TO TAKE IT back. I don't won't to buy a dog that will not perform for me, and I also WANT TO TREAT OTHERS the way I WANT TO BE TREATED!!!! I can't control what a dog does, but I can control what I do!!! If you don't feel that way.....that's you. THe safest way, and best way is to go hunting. I know it is hard to believe, at least it is for me b/c I have a tendency to trust everybody, but some people can lie with a straight face, and they have no conscience. They never look back, they will not be wrong, and they sleep like a baby each night, without giving it a second thought.

You may save a friendship, money, hard feelings, and a lot of time...............just go hunting with the dog!!!

I understand....all along I was thinking, "Smokey River for over 45 years"....looks like to me you would have had this figured out by now.

Money doesn't make people do things "out of character"...it just makes them show their TRUE character!!!!!

Well said!!! BTW, I did have this figured out.....kinda, sorta. I bought a dog a couple of years ago on the recommendation of someone else, and gave the dog away. I asked the guy I bought it from to come here and show me how he hunted him, or offered to bring him up to his place to see how he hunted him.........both cases he said no. I have learned this lesson the hard way.

People will generally raise a big red flag without even realizing they have. I have several rental properties and when I first got in the rental business a man told me told me two things that have proven to be golden...he said, "You are not the dept of social services and the folks that want to rent from you are coming from somewhere...that's the guy you need to talk to." If I ask for that reference, where they last lived, and I get the run around...that's a big red flag!!!
I don't buy and sell dogs, in fact since 1978 when I started coon hunting as a kid my dog deals have been nothing but me taking an understood chance on a puppy. I think if I was going to buy a very valuable dog {$10,000 plus} I would put the money in escrow and try him out. If the seller balked at that...big red flag!!!

Posted by Craig Edwards on 04-19-2017 09:38 PM:

I just hate it when deals go bad.......for everyone!!! I get a red flag feeling when someone lowers the price to encourage you to buy it off the chain. If they offer some kind of incentive to keep you out of the woods with the dog, that's usually a bad sign!!! I don't sell many dogs at all, but when I do, I want the dog to please the owner, where they hunt. If a dog performs for me, and no one else, then I'm the man that needs to keep it.

The ONLY reason I made this post was to try to keep others from making the mistakes that I, and others have made. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure!!!! People need to hunt with a well started dog, or a broke dog. Make sure an agreement is made BEFORE money changes hands. If a seller is not willing to stand behind what they say, in a tangible way, you might want to consider looking somewhere else.

You can never hear it enough or practice good cautious deals too many times. Even the most battle hardened houndsmen can benefit from at least thinking about a bad deal, just to help them steer clear.
I can deal with the worst of them, no one scares me in a deal, but if someone sent me a picture of a really nice black headed, open spotted walker with the right pedigree and song and dance about what a coon dog he/she is I would really be tempted.

Had a higher up in our sport or he thinks so. called and ask if I had a started dog , I told him about a gyp I was hunting he took her .calls back 3 months later and said she was nothing like I said. So I offered his money back he refused and sold her the next week for ten times the amount! Come to find out he neverturned her out! Liars both ways be careful!

Several years ago I had a nice little bitch, coon treer for sure, but she would load up and tree just about long enough for you to put her on the card then get down and move on. Really no ryme or reason to when she would or wouldn't do it. I mentioned I was going to sell her and a friend in another state wanted to go with her. Sure enough she loaded up and moved on, his comment was seeing is believing. I sold her to an older guy that pleasure hunted her a year or two then sold her again. Out of the blue I get this phone guy from guy that bought her, he was telling me all he had won with her and what a dandy she was, went on for about 30 minutes, whole time I am thinking sold that heifer too soon, then I say hey does she still load up on tree and move on, yep she sure does but I know how to hunt her, I just don't tree her till I know for sure she is staying. If I am selling a dog you can hunt it anyway you want to see it go for as many nights as you need here at my house, feel free to bring whatever to hunt with it, when you leave with the dog it's yours, if you choose not to go hunting with it, it's still your dog when you leave with it. Don't expect World Championship Quality at discount prices either!
