SportMix high energy mini chunks. 3 of first 4 ingredients are meat based. Dog have super energy levels, look great. Yeah, it has corn... Going back to basics of 10 years ago. Worked then....

Be careful asking questions like this on here.. A lot of the elite members of this forum take great offense to general questions like dog feed, best light etc..

On this particular forum the skin is thin in most cases and sensitivity is at a high level!

Good luck with your discussion! I myself feed purina and have had good luck with about everything purina makes. Plus the purina points are a nice bonus!

Posted by Cowboybenzo on 04-17-2017 03:15 AM:

I feed the same as triple k. Pro plan during kill season and dog chow during summer. I can't keep the weight off my 5 yr old female unless I hunted her every night but my other two young dogs stay the same weight. I've always fed purina even before I coonhunted and owned retrievers. Never had a health problem or any complaints with it.

They can take offense to it all they want to... if someone asking a simple question in order to build knowledge is gonna make someone mad then they are probably one of those who voted for Hillary Clinton haha😉, I mean come on for real it's dog food,I haven't seen one single person post anything about getting mad about questions, heck that's why I post them so I can hear what other people have to say...and if you read the replies I have been getting then you will see just how much offense has been taken so far...pretty sure I see Bruce post on here as much as anybody and he was not mad about it at all..that's what's wrong with America today, to many people getting their feelings hurt about silly things....keep the replies coming boys!!great job!!!!

Thanks cowboy I'm gonna have to check into that...I have always fed diamond ever since I was young but with all the make-shift ingredients now a days it has me thinking about what's best for my hounds...

If not hunting very hard, they will get fat off the Pro Plan.
The Dog Chow does a good job, dogs maintain good weight, hair looks good, not much waste.
The overheating on corn is Hogwash.....!!!

I have always used Purina dog chow with good results. However, a couple of months ago I found that a local store has started carrying Pride dog food. Same price a purina and more convenient. Now two of my dogs are taking to it as they should. Maybe they have a gut issue. I'll finish what I have and see how they're doing. I'm thinking about going back to purina. Have any of you tried Pride, or know of it?

The Pride 26/18 adult performance (the dark green bag). I don't change the formula for summer either, I just adjust portions.

I used to feed Pride, probably 15 years ago. It was a pretty good feed, but got hard to get. I don't think my Dogs looked as good while on Pride as they do on Purina.
Also, Purina is so easy to get......just about any Grocery has it, along with Feed Stores, Walmarts, Farm Stores, etc.

wbd91, I think they are their own brand. Hills is the company. I know after one of the dog food discussion on here, I received some call from friends and guy involved with the discussion. They recommended it so I figured to give it a try. It has been pushed by vets to house dogs and was high dollar in my opinion. Well my wife has two yorkies have have fed it to them. I tried some and don't have major dislikes with it. As far as price, they have all went up and upper brands are all about the same.

Thing is I think we on here with a few coonhounds are a small number of dogs that eat every day. Just in the county I am in there are thousands of running hounds and few coonhounds. The running hounds eat low dollar food. Doesn't seem to bother them as I see truck load after truck load of them during hunting season.

Couple new brands out which is the caliber and value pac which are getting popular down here for the lower cost. Most feed in this area go from the high twenty a bag to forty bucks. Some of the cheaper ones are 50 pound bags while the higher dollar ones are 40 pound bags.

Posted by yadkintar on 04-17-2017 12:42 PM:

I am feeding the value pack 24/20 I saw a big difference in the purina dog chow I didn't like I am the worlds worst of filling their feed pan all the way up you don't do that with value pack about 1 small coffee can is all they need granny is 10 and it keeps her just right even if I hunt her 2 or 3 nights a week she hunts as hard as a 5 yr old.

Posted by Bruce m. Conkey on 04-17-2017 01:00 PM:

Going with what Rob Thompson said about Victor. A couple years ago I had a 1-2 year old dog that we were hauling around the country (which I think hauling can be hard on some) and we were hunting her hard right through the summer 5 nights a week here. She started looking a little rough. We switched to Victor 24/20 and that made a difference with her. She gained weight, shiny coat. I have raise a few young dogs on it also and they done good. Now mind you I always wean them using purina puppy chow and then at 4 or 5 months swap them off.
I really like what the Victor did for my dogs. Then I started seeing all the hype on here about feed and I will admit I am confused. Sometimes I wish I could get the Old Roy from walmart for ten bucks a bag again. Raised a lot of dogs on it and didn't have the internet to tell me it was wrong.

Thanks Bruce I'm gonna see about it up here where I live, and yadkintar I know a few people that use value pac but they are running bird dogs, don't know if there is that much of a difference..and Bruce again that's why I posted this cause it gets very confusing hearing all the cons about dog food these days...we use to feed old Roy a long time ago and it was cheap and our dogs always did fine

I am a purina guy I don't hunt about 3 to 4 nights a week right now it did not look the same they had loose stools one time than regular the next they acted hot on it the value pack says meat based wheather it is or not I don't know but they are doing great on it same price as purina.

Hills

Hills have their own plants-- first one was at Topeka,KS shipped dog food all over trucks and Railroads for years. now they have a new plant here at Emporia,KS-- they check every load of ingredients before unloading.. it is rather expensive-- pushed by vets a lot.

WAS......

Feeding Victor red bag-24/20 for years!!
But after having same issues as many on here{No females EVER having pups and messed up heat cycles}

Switched to Pro Plan 30/20.Seem to do well on it.
Waiting for Valu Pak to show up in my area.

No Dog chow,lol
Too much 'yellow mush/foam' to clean up
and all lost weight last time I tried it.
