Behavior/actions/the future of the sport

If we want coonhunting and especially competition coonhunting to survive and continue. I think there are some things we need to look at ourselves about and address. Instead of running a person or their dog down behind their back to make our selves look tough or cool. Maybe try helping that person. Also just because we as individuals want or view things one way does not make that the best for everybody. Remember too, there was a day when we were all new to this. Another thing we should not make judgement or run our mouths about something a person is doing or their dog if we are guilty of the same. Each of us has a hand in where this sport goes in the future. My feelings on this stuff right now is playing a big role in the decision to hunt competitively as titling really doesn't make a dog to me. And I'm sure this stuff impacts many others. And you don't need to put every dog down for a mistake or get rid of it. We are not perfect how can you hold a dog to a higher standered. Where would each of us be if our parents got rid of us for making a mistake. In closing think about how you would want you wife child friend or self treated when we you or they were just getting into this. The only way they can learn is help and practice. Thank you.

The difference is you get banned or barred now they just laugh about it and go hunt in anouther kc. Back when I was coming up those same things would have got you taken out behind the clubhouse and you was to scared to tell anybody because you would get it again lol.

I agree to a certain extent for the mistakes part. And I do agree with the rest. The reason I don't agree 100% with the mistakes part is, in my job (welder) I get 3 repairs on that job and I DON"T HAVE A JOB. Now 3 repairs ain't a lot since you can get all 3 on the same weld. Now I don't get a bunch of repairs to start with but if it doesn't meet the code (standards and requirements) the weld it's a repair. I don't expect a dog to be perfect. But coon eyes matter and they better be there the majority of the time you they don't stay. I also understand there's coon educated on dogs too. And they know how to give the dog the slip. And track conditions play a role too. But in the end we're out there to listen to the dog work and look at coon in a tree.

Let me lay out how different guys view this sport and then talk about what happens to them.

You have a guy that truly loves the outdoors and loves to coonhunt. This guy understands what a good dog is, perhaps has one but hunts pups and hunts with friends and at times the dogs make a lot of mistakes. None the less he loves it and continues. This guy takes the wins and the losses and is willing to help others and don't blame the losses on them.

You have the guy that just wants to win hunts and is blind to how his dog performs. Doesn't see the improvements the dog needs but feels it is a winner. He goes to hunts and looses and the blame is always on the other guy or the other guys dog. How close he came, how it should of been different. This this the guy the fellows at the clubhouse tend to talk about. Steve, I know you probably feel like I do that instead of talking about this guy, try and help him. In most cases you soon find out there is no helping him. Flat out a Drama King and Drama follows him around. He is the guy that should of got promoted at work but didn't. He is the guy the real estate deal fell through and it is the banks fault. He is the guy that his ice cream melted and its the freezers fault for it not being frozen hard enough.
Bad part is that it only takes one like this to minimize the hard work and efforts of a dozen.
I think we should be respectful of others. I think it is more important to first show respect for others and a sport before you feel you are owed any.
Answer is to get with your local club and put the dog aside. Ask what you can do to make the club stronger. Work at the club house, mow the grass. Help out during hunts and fellowship with those that have the love of coonhunting at heart. What you will find is if your working with 10 guys from a club, the couple your with cutting grass will be talking about the two over there painting. All you can do is be a shining star for whats right and talk favorable about everyone. It starts with each individual and the mirror shows you the reflection of the only person you have any control over.

What you are talking about isn't exclusive to coon hunting and coon hunters. They are all common faults of human nature. Some people are too mouthy. Some are too trashy. Some can only slick tree (not tell the truth). Some are just plain ole mean. We could continue this list on and on.

One of many lessons I have repeated over and over to my 3 sons is at the end of the day the only 2 things you have any control over is your word and your behavior.

We don't have a coon hunter problem, but our society has a huge one.

sometimes the one accused of running another mans dog down is not really trying to run his dog down.
example: saying the dogs ran trash.
one man can handle the truth and another thinks your just running his dog down.
this may be what is happening or maybe not but i have stuck my foot in my mouth a time or two.

One thing about it you can't accuse many on hear of being jealous because we congradualate winners of all registrys when you look they don't even congradualate their own members. It's all about a coon and a dog no matter where , when and how it happens I am just glad it happens don't know what else I would do if it didn't it's all I have ever been interested in.

Brother, you just described some of the people I have hunted with. They have made me think about selling out many times but I can't. It's the world we live in. Daddy told me growing up, "Son, the best you can do is lay your head down at night and know that you did no man wrong and you tried your best."

I got ran down by the same people at our club you are talking about. I did 3 things:

1. I beat them in a cast with more dog power than they had and with the dog they trashed.
2. I took my dog power to other states and beat the studs and bitches their "great pups" were coming from.
3. I kept my mouth shut and sat back and laughed at them argueing over a stupid club hunt!

I get a lot of satisfaction from that, but everyone is different.

Yeah my initial second thoughts. It's all good now and it happens everywhere. All the clubs. There is some good in friendly competition.

When I was a teenager I had a good female who was winning the majority of her casts. I started hearing people talk down about her and it was getting to me pretty bad as I thought the world of that female. Dad took me aside and said "let me ask you a question, do you hear them talking about so and so and his dogs (that weren't winning)" I said, 'no". He then said " do you hear them talking down about so and so and his dogs (who were also winning)" I said "yes". He said "think about that and then take it as a compliment when they are talking bad about your dog". After that conversation I never worried about it anymore unless they weren't talking bad about my dogs.

Well then I guess that I must be doing something right.
A lot of times no one talks bad about my dogs so I have tell everyone how sorry they are. Just remember, when you have a sorry dog you don't care what other people say about him.
