Pup advice
I have been out of the sport for quite some time and have just now gotten back into it. I have trained numerous hounds with my grandfather and a couple on my own, and have always had great results.. but I'm finding myself in a pickle, I have a 3 month old English female that I have purchased and so far has been the only dog I have ever owned that shows hardly any interest in a coon tail/hide. As I have never came across this problem I'm stuck asking for advice ..she will smell the tail/hide then just take off and do her own thing, even when she sees my trained hound tearing it up she still doesn't care.. which leaves me thinking maybe she's just being a puppy and here one minute gone the next....help me out with advice and tips... thanks
Let's hear some thoughts.
First of all 3 months old means nothing and out of all the 3-4-5 month old pups that you have seen bragged on doing this or that how many went on to be great hounds ??? And these days I have seen so many even at an early age that are so independant won't do nothin with another dog !! More then likely she is being a pup let her play runs thru the woods etc,, and let her gain her trust in you the rest will follow !!! Maybe it won't but as good as the previous breeders have done I have not had a pup yet that wouldn't tree a coon most were lacking in something that got them a new address but all would treee a coon ! if the pup was 13 mo ths old I might think about it depending on what it was doing in the woods also !!
Thanks for the info just a little worried for no reason I guess...I know 3 months is young but by now all the ones I have ever had would atleast chase/chew/ growl at a hide..i don't show caged coons the hide is the most my dogs ever see just never had this problem...glad someone was willing to reply
I quit all that showing coon and hides and stuff along time ago !! I let them be pups get a handle on them young and a lot of woods time during day at your pups age and when they hit 5/6 months old I carry them to the woods a lot of nights and 99% of the time alone !! If it's there they will show you in short order ! The main thing is they' get out and go !! I am in thin coon and if they strike a deer fox oppsum whatever I let them run it !! If they do that and do t stand under your feet you can work with them !! The best I have seen none started treeing coon consistant until a year plus in age are should I say the most accurate track first tree second !! Not saying they aren't out there but I haven't seen none better the. Average that do all that stuff early!! I haven't had one yet that didn't make it but I spend a lot of time and I mean a lot !! Now you shouldne concentrating on building a relationship and obedience loading etc,, a must in my country cause I'm done when I done not the dogs ! Good luck571-233-5819 if I can help I would be glad to but if not patience !!
