Conservation
Went hunting with my old dog last night. Treed one and left it for my young dogs to tree, If more people would do this think how many more they'd be

I doudt we have to practice conservation on the coons... With all the possums & slik trees being reported.😂
In places where coon populations are low I agree with u. But up here in northern Indiana we have a problem of to many coon n not enough hunters to keep the population healthy. Right now distemper is spreading at least in my area. Not nearly as many coon this year as last mostly because a lot of the this years kittens have died. Mother nature has her own ways of keeping things in check.

I'm with Randy on this especially around here, As most people know I hardly shoot a coon out unless we have a pup that's interested around the tree, I know people squall em out smoke em out even cut down den trees to kill a coon, I love coon hunting, not coon killing . My son at 5 yrs old broke me from my coon killing ways 25 years ago. If a law were passed where you could not shoot raccoons I would still love it just as much, to me its about me and my dogs there is nothing better other than having friends that love it just as much.

Randy I agree with what you're saying, when it comes to areas where coon are thin..... About 10 12 years ago distemper worked on the coon population here. But they made a good come back. This year I've seen a ton of road kills.

Mr foster that'd be nice to have coons like that. We can tree coons here but it's rough. One and I'm ready to go to the house

Randy I understand about the thin coon. If we had thin coon I would harvest very few. We just have a different problem up here. It used to really bother me to take one in the summer. I hate to see an animal go to waste but with few people harvesting coon anymore it might b the only way to keep the population thinned down n keep the distemper away. Regardless I won't do it till after the kits are born. Every area has its own conservation needs . I certainly do appreciate that fact I live and hunt in the land of plenty but the grass isn't always greener. Every year there more an more house being built by city folk that don't understand our love for this sport. And a big hunting dog around here will cheat death around here every night crossing all these roads going from small patch to small patch. Happy hunting to all

True conservation is making sure that the number of wild animals fits the amount of food available. In some instances you have to decrease the number of animals or mother nature will do it. And mother nature is not very good at it. In other places you can let the population increase. But just because you dont harvest a wild animal doesn't neccasarily mean that you are practicing good conservation.
Shoot em all, all year long

The population is usually based on how much food is available. If there isn't much food, not killing the coon won't give you any more coons. If there is a lot of food you'll have a lot of coon and if they aren't killed the excess numbers will starve. We don't have but a few coons here. For the first time in 15 years I saw a live coon on the road in the national forest. I had just boxed the dogs and we were too close to the road or I would have release them again.

I'll knock em out to a young dog, my 4 yr old is trained. We have enough coons to tree one when I go. But dang they have to get in there sometimes! Lol But I decided to leave some sitting up for later.

Killing or not killing coon is usually based on where you live and your coon population. Growing up in Southwest VA I killed very few coon even to a pup, we just didn't have that many at the time. If you live in the land of many coon you've probably never thought a second time about killing 10 or more coon a night.
Those of you that have never gone to any of the state's that have lots and lots of coon can not understand just how many coon they actually have. I recommend becoming friends with someone from one of the state's that have LOTS of coon and go hunt with them for a few nights if you can. The only problem with doing this is once you get home you won't want to hunt for a couple of weeks. Lol

Oh my goodness, I wish that I knew someone in one of those places with a lot of coon. Dennis, do you know someone? Outlaw Bond is the reason that the coons are so thin in Southwest Va.
I don't know anyone Richard..... Why do you think my dog lives at Linkous'? Lol
